The Huskies have made a huge addition under center.
Nick Evers, a four-star recruit from the Class of 2022 who started his career at Oklahoma before transferring to Wisconsin last year, has announced his commitment to UConn.
The 6-foot-3 Texas native has only thrown one collegiate pass but comes to Storrs with the strongest pedigree of any incoming signal caller in recent memory. Ta’Quan Roberson, the former Penn State transfer and former holder of that mantle, announced his intention to transfer from UConn earlier today.
Evers likely steps into a situation where he is expected to be the favorite to earn the starting duties. His primary competition will be Joseph Fagnano, the Maine transfer who earned the starting job for the 2023 season opener but went down with a season-ending injury in the second game, and a handful of younger guys who are probably a bit too green. Zion Turner, another QB formerly in the room, has transferred to Jacksonville State, one of the newer FBS teams.
Evers was a top-10 quarterback coming out of the Class of 2022 and a big pickup for the Wisconsin Badgers under new head coach Luke Fickell. The Badgers added two more transfer QBs who immediately vaulted him on the depth chart and then this offseason added Miami transfer Tyler Van Dyke. He was taking third-team reps in practice and decided to make a “realistic decision,” according to The Athletic.
“Nick definitely is a different product right now than he was last year,” Wisconsin OC Phil Longo was quoted as saying in that article. “You would hope you’d see the progress over the course of a year. And we are. He’s doing some things better. He’s making some better decisions. Obviously, he’s athletic, so he’s been making some plays with his legs as well. So that’s what we want. We’ve got to keep grinding now with him to make more progress and get him to where we would want him to be.”
UConn has added multiple new receivers in the portal including Skyler Bell, also from Wisconsin, and TJ Sheffield from Purdue. Evers should have a chance to take advantage of this influx of talent along with solid situations at running back and offensive line. His addition may also make UConn a desirable destination for more portal recruits as the Huskies look to further bolster their roster this summer.
UConn lost offensive coordinator Nick Charlton to a job with the Cleveland Browns this offseason, choosing to elevate offensive line coach Gordon Sammis to fill his seat. They then hired a new QB Coach Brad Robbins. The new offensive brain trust has struck quickly with this massive addition at the most important position on the field. Evers will have at least two years of eligibility remaining.
