The experienced guard will help fill a depleted Husky backcourt.
UConn men’s basketball has picked up another asset in the transfer portal, landing former Saint Mary’s guard Aidan Mahaney.
Mahaney, a First-Team All-WCC selection in each of the last two seasons, has two years of eligibility remaining and picked the Huskies over Creighton, Kentucky, and Virginia.
Standing at 6-foot-3, Mahaney should offer some size in the Huskies’ new backcourt with the likes of Tristen Newton, Stephon Castle, and Cam Spencer now gone. Mahaney was the center of the Gaels’ offense last season, helping lead Saint Mary’s to an NCAA tournament berth for a third-straight season. He averaged 13.9 points per game last season and shot 35.5 percent from three on 231 attempts. For his career, the California native is a 37.3 percent shooter (153-410) from beyond the arc.
Mahaney visited Storrs last weekend shortly after a visit to Creighton in Omaha. He joins Michigan big man Tarris Reed Jr. as part of the Huskies’ 2024 portal class and joins standout freshman Liam McNeeley as the third newcomer to the team in recent weeks.
With the additions of Reed, McNeeley, and Mahaney, Dan Hurley and the Huskies still have three open scholarships for the upcoming season. Hassan Diarra and Alex Karaban could still fill two of those spots, potentially.
