Series History
UConn and Georgetown have 76 matchups in series history, and the Huskies have typically gotten the better of their conference opponents, with a 54-22 all-time record against the Hoyas. Although Georgetown had historically struggled as a program before this year, it were able to gain their first sweep of the Huskies since 2001 in their first three-game series back as conference-mates in 2022.
What to Watch For
Typically making a home for itself in the basement of the Big East, Georgetown is currently in the midst of one of the best seasons in school history. The Hoyas sit at 26-10 on the year and currently lead the Big East with eight conference wins.
Georgetown hasn’t played the toughest non-conference slate, sitting at No. 159 in the country in strength of schedule, but series sweeps of Fairleigh Dickinson, Albany and Ohio State have them at No. 53 in RPI, one spot above the Huskies. In conference, it has swept Villanova and Butler, while also taking two out of three from Seton Hall.
Much of Georgetown’s hot start is attributed to starting pitching. Two of the team’s three starters this weekend are southpaws, and their prowess from the left side of the mound has propelled the Hoyas to a 4.56 team ERA, the 34th-best mark in the nation.
UConn’s lineup continued to resurrect its team’s season, with 11 runs in each of the opening and closing games of their series against St. John’s to take the weekend victory, and it pitching staff stepped up to score a huge victory in the midweek against Kansas State. Luke Broadhurst continues to hit well, riding a seven-game hitting streak coming into the series and leading the Huskies in OPS (1.004) and RBI (28). Paul Tammaro is still far and away the Huskies’ batting leader, with a .320 average.
The Georgetown starting lineup hasn’t been a passenger either. Six Hoya batters are hitting over .300 on the year, led by four-year starter Christian Ficca who leads the team in average (.345), OPS (1.048) and RBI (45). Jake Hyde, the right fielder batting leadoff, brings power to the lineup with a team-leading nine home runs on the year. Michael Eze, another Hoya veteran, brings speed to the basepaths with a Big East-leading 23 stolen bases in 26 attempts.
Georgetown poses a unique threat to the Huskies in 2024 that it might not have in previous years, and UConn will have a tough test ahead, especially away from home.
