Georgetown’s Ed Cooley: ‘We’re blessed to be 1-6 in the league’

January 18, 2026 by Zags Blog

By ADAM ZAGORIA

Georgetown head coach Ed Cooley raised a few eyebrows with his latest post-game comments following his team’s loss to No. 3 UConn.

Following a 64-62 home loss on Saturday, Cooley tried to put a positive spin on the loss in the context of world events.

“There’s a lot worse happening than Georgetown losing a basketball game…around the world, around our city, around our community,” Cooley said, per Jaden Daly, who covered the game. “You know what we are? We’re blessed. We’re blessed to be 9-9, we’re blessed to be 1-6 in the league. It could be a lot worse.”

The Hoyas fought hard before falling to a team with Final Four aspirations. Only Marquette has a worse Big record at 1-7.

Meantime, UConn coach Dan Hurley — whose team is 8-0 in the Big East for the first time since 1998-99 — advised his fans not to “nitpick” his players.

“I don’t think our fan base should be nitpicking an 18-1 team that’s 8-0 in the Big East,” he told reporters. “I think you should just be thrilled to have a team that’s … ranked second in the country.”

“Don’t nitpick the players. If you want to nitpick the coach, nitpick the coach.”
