Spencer performed well enough on his two-way contract to earn a fully-guaranteed deal

UConn alumnus Cam Spencer is staying in Memphis, per NBA insider Shams Charania. Following his rookie season, the former Husky signee’s a two-year, fully guaranteed contract with the Grizzlies on Monday.

Spencer has impressed at both the NBA level and in the G League, playing his entire rookie season on a two-way contract. Following his selection as the No. 53 pick of the 2024 NBA Draft, he appeared in 25 games for the Grizzlies, averaging 4.2 points, 1.2 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game. In five games with the G League’s Memphis Hustle this season, Spencer averaged 20.4 points on 48.5 percent shooting from the floor, alongside 2.8 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game. He scored 51 points with 12 made threes in a game with the Hustle in early December.

Where Spencer’s value truly resides is in his spirit. Spencer always brought the intensity for UConn, helping propel the Huskies to a second-consecutive national championship in 2024. In the NBA, he has been his usual self.

Spencer adds depth to a Memphis team that already has some established veterans at the shooting guard position. The Grizzlies acquired Kentavious Caldwell-Pope three days ago in a trade that sent Desmond Bane to Orlando and signed Ty Jerome to a three-year $28 million deal just hours ago.

Nonetheless, Memphis sees something in Spencer, who secures two years of job security with a team that finished eighth last year in the Western Conference.
