They move on to Eugene

The Syracuse Orange track teams sent 12 athletes to the NCAA East Region meet last weekend in Jacksonville and two athletes have punched their tickets to Eugene and the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Sprinter Iaunia Pointer broke her Syracuse school record twice at the regionals as she finished 10th in the 200m in a new Orange record of 22.90.

Despite a long weather delay which pushed the start time of the 10k back to 12:55 am, Junior Sam Lawler finished 8th in the race in 29:04. This will be Sam’s second-straight NCAA appearance- he was 17th in the 10k last year. Teammate Assaf Harari finished one spot from advancing taking 13th place while Perry Mackinnon was 32nd.

In the women’s 10k, Savannah Roark was also 13th, by just .39 seconds, as she finished in 33:14. Rylie Lusk finished 22nd and Emma Eastman was 33rd. Heidi Demeo finished 38th in the women’s 1500m.

Unfortunately, Harari and Roark weren’t the only Orange runners to finish one spot from advancing. Julian Franjieh ended up 13th in the 3000m steeplechase while Solomon Holden-Betts was 35th in the event.

In the hurdles, Emmanuel Joseph advanced out of the first round and then finished in 22nd place. Xayvion Perkins was the final qualifier in the first round of the 400m hurdles, but was 23rd overall in the next round.

The NCAA Outdoor Championships will be held June 11-14 from Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. Congratulations to Iaunia and Sam!
