NJ connection paying off again?

The Syracuse Orange hosted Notre Dame quarterback transfer Steve Angeli on Monday. CBSSports and 247Sports reporter Matt Zenitz first reported that Angeli was set to visit Syracuse. On3Sports’ Steve Wiltfong minutes later reported that Angeli was visiting on Monday.

Syracuse football head coach Fran Brown made it known on CuseSportsTalk that he was still looking to add at least a quarterback and linebacker in the spring transfer portal window. Angeli has played in 21 games for the Irish. He started one game, which was the 2023 Sun Bowl after Sam Hartman opted out to prepare for the NFL draft. Angeli led the Fighting Irish to a 40-8 win in that game over Oregon State. He threw for 232 yards and three touchdowns.

Angeli was the primary backup to Riley Leonard last season. Angeli most notably played in the final minutes of the first half against Penn State in the CFP quarterfinals at the Orange Bowl after Leonard was injured. Angeli threw for 44 yards on 6-of-7 passing before Leonard returned for the second half. Angeli threw for 722 yards and 10 touchdowns in his Notre Dame career.

Angeli was in a three-way quarterback battle this spring at Notre Dame. He was fighting alongside former four-star recruits CJ Carr and Kenny Minchey to replace Leonard as the Fighting Irish’s new staring quarterback.

Most notable, Angeli is from New Jersey. He played his high school football at Bergen Catholic High School. Current Syracuse quarterbacks coach Nunzio Campanile was previously the head coach at Bergen Catholic. His brother, Vito, is the current Bergen Catholic head coach.

Syracuse does not have any veteran or experienced quarterbacks in the room at the moment. The most experienced player, Michael Johnson Jr., entered the transfer portal in the spring window. Rickie Collins is now the Syracuse quarterback with the most college experience as a redshirt sophomore. Every other player is either a freshman or redshirt freshman. Angeli, should he decided to come to Syracuse, would be either a redshirt junior or senior with two years of college eligibility remaining.

College football player have until April 25 to put their names in the transfer portal.
