Let’s meet one of the most interesting additions to the Orange roster
Name: Garrett Shrader
Weight: 221 lbs.
Hometown: Charlotte, N.C.
High School: Charlotte Christian School
2020 stats: Shrader was on the Mississippi State Bulldogs roster, and was moved off quarterback to wide receiver by new head coach Mike Leach. After appearing in 4 games, Shrader and Leach agreed it was best to part ways and the former entered the transfer portal.
2021 projections: As I’ve written about extensively, Shrader’s appearance on campus does not make him the starter for the Syracuse Orange. Dino Babers all but confirmed this recently, admitting that Shrader is a bit behind returning starter Tommy DeVito. However, in that same piece, Babers reminds us that his most successful season utilized both Dungey and DeVito, so the backup is important to the team’s success. Shrader should be ready to see the field in mop up duty and if DeVito has yet another injury issue pop up.
How’d he get here?: The Orange offered Shrader out of high school, but the QB was close with Joe Moorehead and followed the coach to Mississippi State. After the falling out with Leach, Shrader picked the Orange thanks to early and positive calls with offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert.
What’d recruiting sites say?: 4 Stars, with 247 have him as a top 250 recruit out of high school.
Money quote: Dino had some solid words about his new backup QB’s offseason work.
“Garrett’s body has changed just as much as anybody’s body,” Babers said. “I think he’s a really, really good player just like everybody else does.”

Tweets of wonder: Garrett’s not a big tweeter, so here’s his commitment tweet!

What movie would Dino recommend for him?: Perhaps the most famous of director Paul Shrader’s movies, Taxi Driver is an all time classic high action movie that fits Garrett’s style of play.
Interesting nugget o’interest: Garrett’s father was a letter winner at The Citadel in both football and baseball.
Let’s get a look at ya: Here’s a taste of what the QB can do with his legs and his body, much like another QB who played for the Orange.
