The Red Storm are ranked 22nd in the latest Associated Press top 25 poll released on Monday afternoon, marking their ranking since January 7, 2019, when they were 24th in the nation after winning 14 of their first 15 games.
Losses and poor performances from ranked teams in the season’s opening week cleared a path for the Red Storm to enter the polls. St. John’s leapfrogged then No. 13 Texas A&M, No. 19 Texas, and No. 23 Ole Miss, with the first two suffering respective losses to UCF and Ohio State and Ole Miss barely defeating Grambling State by two.
St. John’s received 91 votes in the preseason AP Top 25 poll, the second-most among unranked teams at the time. They nearly doubled that total with 178 in this week’s poll after a 32-point win over Fordham and a 23-point win over Quinnipiac, joining fellow Big East teams UConn (#3), Creighton (#14), and Marquette (#15) in the rankings.
The 22nd-ranked Red Storm will return to action on Wednesday night when they take on the Wagner Seahawks at Carnesecca Arena (6:30 p.m., FS2).
