On Monday night, St. John’s star LJ Figueroa reportedly told the coaching staff that he is looking at other options.
Figueroa has been one of the top players for the Red Storm over the last two years. The former four-star recruit out of Orlando began his college career in the junior college ranks. Over the last two seasons, he has been one of the Big East’s better scorers.
After averaging 14.4 points as the Red Storm’s third leading scorer in 2018-19, he upped his scoring average by 0.1 points and went from 1.7 to 2.1 assists per game. His efficiency suffered by the loss of Shamorie Ponds and Mustapha Heron from the year before, but it a very capable college scorer.
According to multiple reports, he’s entering the transfer portal. There should be plenty of teams interested in bringing Figueroa on. He’ll be one of the more experienced scorers in college basketball next season.
This is not the first time that LJ Figueroa has been in the portal. He entered after the 2018-19 season, but wound up staying in Queens.
As a high school player, Figueroa was the No. 116 recruit in the country out of West Oaks Academy.
He was the No. 25 shooting guard, and the ninth-ranked recruit in the state of Florida for that season.
Florida, Louisville, Miami, Texas Tech, and Virginia Tech were among the programs that were after him out of high school, before his junior college stint. He wound up shocking many by signing with New Mexico State, but did not ended up playing for the Aggies, and went the junior college route instead.
We should find out more about his options for his next college stop in the coming days.
