After St. John’s topped UConn on the road Friday night, 68-62, the Red Storm are one of the hottest teams in the country. Rick Pitino’s bunch has won 10-straight games and sit alone atop the Big East standings at 12-1. And now, St. John’s is projected to be a No. 4 seed in March Madness.
Joe Lunardi’s latest bracket has St. John’s as the last No. 4 seed, making them effectively No. 16 overall in the country. You could argue the Red Storm should be higher, especially after beating No. 3-seeded Marquette at home and UConn on the road in their last two games.

“You really have to play turnover free basketball,” Pitino said on the UConn win via ESPN’s College GameDay. “That’s really the only way you can get a good road victory. You have to keep your turnovers around eight, nine turnovers maximum. It creates more possessions for you that way.”
It’ll be interesting to see how St. John’s closes the regular season. It still has dates with Creighton, UConn and Marquette, all who are in the top four of the Big East standings. On the bright side, Marquette is the only game on the road, and it’s to end the regular season on March 8.
“We have a great group of guys and we’re getting better each game,” Pitino said. “And that’s the important thing. We’ve got a month to prepare and get even better. So I’m excited about the future.”
