The pair of Red Storm seniors joined RJ Luis Jr. in linking up with NBA teams despite not getting selected in this year’s draft
Despite going unselected alongside newest Utah Jazz member, RJ Luis Jr., two more eligible St. John’s standouts signed their first professional contracts after this week’s NBA draft.
Kadary Richmond signed a two-way contract with the Washington Wizards, while Aaron Scott agreed to a Summer League deal with the Boston Celtics this past Thursday.
The senior duo transferred to St. John’s for their final seasons of college eligibility, becoming important contributors and versatile ball stoppers on one of the best defensive teams in the country.
Richmond came to Queens after spending four seasons with local rivals Seton Hall and Syracuse. The Brooklyn native took some time to get going in Queens but settled in as a steady two-way playmaker and dependable downhill scorer for the eventual Big East double champions. The two-time All-Big East selection averaged 12.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 2.0 steals, hitting 48.7% from the field and only 17.5% from three.

Scott was a more under-the-radar pickup when he came over from North Texas, but was a critical wing defender for the Red Storm whose switchability and physicality fit perfectly in Rick Pitino’s defensive structure. Over 36 games, the swingman from Spring, Texas, posted 8.4 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.0 assists, and 1.4 steals while hitting 38.9% from the field and 29.3% from deep.

At worst next season, Kadary Richmond will compete with the Wizards’ G-League affiliated team, the Capital City Go-Go, but could play his way onto the 15-man roster and earn a guaranteed contract if he performs well enough on the young, rebuilding team. However, Aaron Scott will need to make a strong impression in only a handful of Summer League games with the Celtics to sign an Exhibit-10, two-way, or guaranteed deal with an NBA team.
