The Georgia native becomes the fourth Red Storm player from last season’s team to agree to a pro contract after signing with his home-state team
Every St. John’s player from last season’s Big East double-champion squad to enter the draft now has a professional contract.
Deivon Smith agreed to a Summer League deal with his home-state Atlanta Hawks on Saturday, getting the chance to play his way into a guaranteed deal later this month. Zach Braziller of the New York Post first reported the news.
A consensus four-star recruit from the high school class of 2020, Smith enjoyed a well-traveled college basketball career emblematic of the transfer portal era, playing for Mississippi State, Georgia Tech, Utah, and St. John’s over his five years of college ball.
The native of Loganville, Georgia averaged 9.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.4 steals per game in 30 contests played and 17 starts, shooting 38% from the floor and 35.2% from deep.
Smith becomes the fourth Red Storm player to agree to their first professional contract this offseason. RJ Luis Jr. and Kadary Richmond agreed to two-way deals with the Utah Jazz and Washington Wizards, respectively, while Aaron Scott agreed to a Summer League deal with the Boston Celtics last week.
