The Debrief, 7/5/22: Air Force playmaker Micah Davis to transfer

Davis scored six touchdowns last season as a runner and receiver. Plus, links from around the academies.

Welcome to the Debrief, a semi-regular-ish download of news related to sports at the Service Academies, and the intersection of sports and the military.

One of Air Force’s top offensive playmakers is leaving the program.

Slotback Micah Davis announced in a tweet last week that he is entering the transfer portal.

Davis was going to enter his junior year in Colorado Springs this fall. Cadets at the academy can leave before their junior year without penalty. Once their junior year classes begin, they are committed to military service.

A season ago, as a sophomore, Davis carried the ball 47 times for 360 yards and four touchdowns – an average of 7.7 yards per-carry. He also caught 10 passes for 221 yards and two scores – an average of 22.1 yards per-catch. His six touchdowns from scrimmage were the fourth most on the team last year.

A 5-foot-11 native of Atlanta, Georgia, Davis should have three years of eligibility left. Since he played in the 2020 season, that shouldn’t count toward his eligibility clock because of the NCAA’s COVID-era ruling.

With Davis leaving, the Falcons’ top returning pass catcher for this season will be junior Dane Kinamon, who caught 10 passes for 141 yards and two scores last season. He also rushed 37 times for 165 yards and five touchdowns.

Kinamon should see an increased role in the offense with Davis out of the picture.

Notes and links

  • Air Force has announced its women’s soccer schedule for this fall. The Falcons will open the season – their first under new coach Laura Busby – at Seattle University on Aug. 18. They’ll host Army on Aug. 26. They will not play Navy this season.
  • The Falcons also announced their men’s ice hockey schedule for the 2022-23 season. After an exhibition against Colorado College, they’ll open their regular season at home on Oct. 7 against Maine.
  • Former Navy quarterback Malcolm Perry – who is now with the New England Patriots – hosted a football camp recently at Fort Riely.
  • A team from the American will face a team from the Mountain West in football in 2023 and 2026, but it won’t be Navy and Air Force. Memphis and Boise State recently agreed to a two-game series.
  • Army recently picked up a commitment from a running back in El Paso, Texas. He also had offers from Navy, New Mexico and Ivy League schools.
  • Navy graduate Joe Cardona penned this piece in Sports Illustrated called, “Football No Longer Mimics War, but That’s O.K.”
  • The Athletic took a look at expansion candidates for the Pac-12. Air Force is not one of them. Remember, the Falcons turned down the AAC about a year ago to remain in the Mountain West.
