Since making his return with the Long Island Nets this past season, Terry Roberts has always expressed his gratitude that he’s back on track in a sport that was almost stolen away from him back in February 24 when he almost died following a random shooting on a Philadelphia street corner.
Now, Roberts return is continuing to make headlines as he was invited by the Brooklyn Nets to play for their Summer League roster.
Almost a year to the day after the shooting, Roberts rejoined the Long Island Nets and looked great coming back to play. Roberts started 14 games while playing in 31. He averaged 25.7 minutes per game, 6.7 points, and 5.2 assists per game, putting up bigger numbers when he filled in for Killian Hayes. NetsDaily had the chance to catch up with Roberts after his first game back.
“I feel amazing,” Roberts told ND. “I feel great to be back, playing for Long Island, my hometown.
“I’m taking it one game at a time,” Roberts said when asked about his mindset. “Continuing to get back to the same T-Rob I was last year. My teammates and coaching staff have helped me with that, so just being the same me is my mindset coming back.”
The shooting was simply a case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Roberts was shot in the chest and had to be placed on a ventilator. A long rehab followed for the then 23-year-old.
Roberts said on return that his main goal was just getting back to being himself. “I have a great support system around me, great teammates, and a great coaching staff. So, just getting back to being me is my biggest thing right now.”
One of Roberts’ best games with Long Island came back on February 25th, when Roberts picked up his first triple-double of the season. He scored 10 points while picking up 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Roberts also showed his ability as a ball hawk, picking up three steals in the process.
When Hayes got promoted to the Brooklyn Nets in February, Roberts filled in neatly as Long Island’s starting point guard for Long Island, and he looked solid despite what he had gone through. Following his triple-double performance, Roberts had 17 points and a whopping 13 assists in the next game.
Following end of the G League season, Roberts kept playing. He joined the Winnipeg Seabears of the Canadian Basketball League.
