We expect the Nets to be involved in a few more deals this offseason, specifically one that includes restricted free agent Cam Thomas. In the meantime, the Nets have been pretty busy this offseason depending on how you define “busy” and what expectations were entering the summer. They’ve chosen the route of asset acquisition while absorbing big contracts such as Michael Porter Jr.
The reaction from national media hasn’t been reassuring if not moot.
First, Brian Windhorst made a comment that other GMs laughed at what the Nets were doing at the Draft. The latest comes from Bill Simmons and Ryen Russillo, who feel the Nets are in No Man’s Land. Of course, it could be worse and a lot of this sounds dramatic, but we’re on the side of waiting and seeing in the interim… because most of the guys they acquired have not played a single minute in the NBA.
All in all, we need to look back at this offseason as the one the changed the Nets — if they find one star out of the five they drafted or whatever equates to competence and success in the near future.
Here are the four major moves (excluding the Draft):
Denver Trade: Brooklyn traded Cam Johnson in exchange for Michael Porter Jr. and a first-round pick from the Nuggets that will convey in 2032.
Atlanta Trade: Acquired Terance Mann and the draft rights to guard/forward Drake Powell, the 22nd overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, from the Atlanta Hawks in a three-team trade with the Boston Celtics. To complete the deal, Brooklyn also sent cash considerations to Boston.
Re-Signed Day’Ron Sharpe (2 years, $12 million).
Re-Signed Ziaire Williams (2 years, $12 million).
