Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas had a breakout year in the 2023-24 season as he went from bench scorer to arguably Brooklyn’s offensive player during a challenging campaign. While most of the Nets fanbase was hoping that Thomas would be rewarded for his improvement in some way, that turned out to not be the reality.
The NBA released the voting results of the Most Improved Player of the Year award via their “X” account on Tuesday and Thomas is further down the list than expected. According to the results, Thomas finished with the seventh-most total points in the field, including no votes for first place.
This news isn’t sudden given that the NBA released the list of finalists on Sunday and Thomas was not in that group. To Thomas’ credit, he did receive two second-place votes (three points each) and 10 third-place votes (one point each), tying him for sixth on the list in second-place votes and tied for fourth in third-place votes.
Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey won the award and rightfully so given that he averaged 25.9 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 6.2 assists per game while shooting 45% from the field and 37.3% from three-point land, resulting in his first All-Star appearance in his fourth season in the league.
While Thomas was not close to winning the award when it comes to the voting results, that doesn’t mean that he didn’t have a great season in his own right. Thomas, 22, averaged 22.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game while shooting 44.2% from the field and 36.4% from deep.
