Brooklyn Nets guard Dennis Schroder is set to go into the 2024-25 season to compete for the starting point guard job as the team heads into a full rebuild. Schroder has clearly been enjoying himself this summer and while free-agency has died down, this is a good time to remember what could have been for Schroder.
Bryan Toporek of Bleacher Report recently ranked Schroder as one of the players that missed out on a huge payday due to a miscalculation of what the free-agent market would bring. The reason why is because his time with the Los Angeles Lakers, Schroder turned down a four-year, $84 million contract extension, according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst.
To be clear, ESPN’s Dave McMenamin reported that the Lakers approached Schroder’s agent about an extension without providing specific terms, something that Schroder denied at the time. Schroder went on to sign a one-year, $5.89 million deal with the Boston Celtics heading into the 2021-22 season before going back to the Lakers on a one-year, $2.64 contract for the 2022-23 season.
Schroder eventually got back on track when he signed a two-year, $25.4 million deal with the Toronto Raptors heading into the 2023-24 campaign before being traded to the Nets at the trade deadline. Schroder is set to make $13 million from Brooklyn this season which is not too far off from the $21 million in average annual value (AAV) that he would have made from the Lakers if he accepted the extension.
Schroder has since moved on from the incident and even had some fun it initially, but he has also maintained that the extension was not formally offered by the Lakers. He even told Yahoo! Sports’ Jake Fischer that if the Lakers offered that extension to him, he would have signed it.
