Cam Johnson Trade Rumors Slowing Down

June 30, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

Trade rumors followed Nets forward Cam Johnson throughout the 2024-25 season. Before the draft, speculation swirled around Brooklyn exploring trade options. League sources hinted at efforts to move up the draft board or pursue a superstar. However, no deal materialized. Now, as Cam Johnson trade rumors fade, it appears Brooklyn may retain one of its core rotation pieces at least for now.

Cam Johnson Trade Rumors Slowing Down

Johnson, 29, ranks among the NBA’s most skilled and efficient forwards. Drafted 11th overall in 2019, he’ll enter his seventh season. He averaged 18.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.4 assists this past year, reinforcing his value as a core contributor. The Nets went 5-20 without him in the lineup, highlighting how vital his presence is on both ends of the court. That kind of consistency underscores why he deserves long-term stability as Brooklyn shapes its next era.

In April, Johnson addressed the trade speculation and reaffirmed his commitment to staying in Brooklyn. “[I’ll] definitely go to [general manager Sean Marks] and ask because I have a very vested interest in what we’re doing here,” he said. “I feel like I’ve put a lot of effort into trying to be a part of this program, and I take that very seriously.”

Teams Interested In Johnson

Multiple teams reportedly expressed interest in acquiring Johnson, including the San Antonio Spurs and Minnesota Timberwolves. League insiders viewed San Antonio as the most likely fit. With ample space before reaching the first aprob and a young core led by Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs could add Johnson without disrupting their financial flexibility. Acquiring him may not interfere with their ability to pursue a superstar like Giannis Antetokounmpo, should he become available.

The Timberwolves also surfaced in discussions, seeking added perimeter shooting and a veteran presence at the forward spot. While talks never advanced, Johnson’s skill set clearly aligns with the needs of contending teams.

Cam Johnson Trade Rumors Fade

The Nets drafted five players in the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft. They also acquired additional future picks, signaling a commitment to long-term growth. Meanwhile, the organization must decide whether to re-sign some of Johnson’s teammates, including Cam Thomas, whose development could shape the team’s core.

Although Johnson trade rumors have faded, he could still be traded if timing and return align with Brooklyn’s evolving vision. Johnson remains under a four-year, $94.5 million contract with two years remaining. That structure sets up two possibilities next summer: a trade or a contract extension. The Nets hold the league’s most cap space and the leverage to extend Johnson if they choose.

So, What’s Next?

With trade activity heating up across the league, the Nets will likely monitor other teams’ moves and potential opportunities. For now, they control Johnson’s fate and how he fits within their broader strategy. Johnson’s time in Brooklyn has been impactful, and he has proven himself as a reliable, high-level contributor. However, his name will likely remain in the rumor mill as long as interest persists. For him, hopefully he finally receives the stability he deserves and the role he’s worked hard to earn.
