2025 NBA Draft: 4 Lottery Teams Have Worked Out Tre Johnson

June 25, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

On the eve of the 2025 NBA Draft, several prospects that received invites to green room were interviewed, answering myriad queries about the pre-draft process. Much of the attention went to Rutgers freshman forward Ace Bailey, who has caused a stir by avoiding workouts with teams in the top-five. However, Texas freshman wing Tre Johnson’s pressers were even more eye-opening.

A consensus top-seven selection, Johnson could feasibly get drafted as high as third overall; the pick held by Philadelphia 76ers. Indeed, Johnson very well may be the safest option between him, Bailey and Baylor guard VJ Edgecombe. However, when asked about which teams he’s worked out for, the Dallas native didn’t mention 2023 NBA MVP Joel Embiid’s squad.

So far, Johnson has worked out for the Brooklyn Nets, Utah Jazz, Charlotte Hornets, and Washington Wizards, he tells reports (h/t Brian Lewis of the New York Post).

The Hornets have the highest pick (No. 4) among those teams, with the Jazz (No. 5) right behind them. The Wizards pick (No. 6) falls right outside of the top-five, while the Nets pick (No. 8) is just inside the top-10. Despite the popularity of the best player available approach, Johnson could also be a need pick for them.

With that in mind, two of those teams fit Johnson more than the others.

Brooklyn Nets

The Nets are all but a blank slate. There are various players that play an important or invaluable role for them. However, it’s so early in their rebuild process, nothing is set in stone. There’s no one on the roster that can claim they’re safe.

Then one looks at Johnson, the Devin Booker-esque prospect with star upside. Should he reach his ceiling, the team will definitely have at least one cornerstone. With that in mind, over the past three seasons, shot-maker Cam Thomas has looked like he could be another. If re-signed this offseason, he and Thomas could become one of the most potent backcourts in the NBA.

Charlotte Hornets

Conventional wisdom says that Edgecombe or Bailey should be higher priorities for Charlotte than Johnson if available. The Hornets were one of the worst defensive teams in the league last season, particularly at the point of attack. However, Edgecombe hasn’t worked out for Charlotte. Furthermore, as previously mentioned, he and Bailey could come off the board in the top-three.

In that event, Johnson is a prospect that could feasibly start on the wing in the near and far future. If slotted between LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller, he’s more likely to erupt than Josh Green. If the controversial Miles Bridges is traded, both Green and Johnson could play on the wing while Miller slides to the four-spot.

However, Johnson could also play a sixth man role, providing a spark with his natural scoring ability while he sharpens his playmaking and decision-making.
