The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is filled with many of the greatest players to have played the game. This year, NBA luminaries like Vince Carter were officially enshrined, headlining the Class of 2024. A generational athlete who had few holes in his game in his prime, Carter’s induction was one of the most heartfelt moments in HOF history.

The Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2025 could be adding a player with a story that’s been quite similar to Carter’s in Carmelo Anthony.

The 10-time All-Star is the most enduringly popular player amongst a list of nominees that includes: three-time Defensive Player of the Year award winner Dwight Howard, six-time All-Star selection Amar’e Stoudemire, four-time WNBA champion Sue Bird, and four-time WNBA champion Maya Moore.

Like Carter, Anthony has a complicated history with his former teams. He left the team that drafted him, the Denver Nuggets, rather unceremoniously. His tenure with the New York Knicks, the team the Nuggets traded him to, helped to grow his legend. Yet, it also led to his infamy.

It’s one thing to not lead a team like Denver to a championship. In fact, the Nuggets won their first NBA title just two years ago. Due to their ravenous fan base and playoff history, it’s another thing entirely to not lead New York to one. The Knicks haven’t won a ring since 1973 but they’ve had multiple NBA Finals appearances.

New York’s inability to do so while amassing as much talent as they did in his tenure is largely seen as an indictment of his ability. Even Stoudemire, his former teammate, has alluded to Anthony as a source of the Knicks’ failures.

A Generational Career

While Anthony has no shortage of critics, he has plenty of fans. A player who briefly rivaled LeBron James in his time with the Nuggets, the DMV native is considered one of the best scorers ever. His jab step and jumper combo may not have been made for the NBA’s three-point craze. Nonetheless, it was a reliable source of offense for well over a decade.

In fact, Anthony ranks 10th all-time in career points (28,289) among former NBA players.

The bucket-getter may not have reached the heights he wanted. Nonetheless, he’s a highly decorated former superstar. He’s also a three-time Olympic gold medalist. After the Paris Olympics, Kevin Durant dethroned him as Team USA’s top performer. Even still, he, James, Durant are universally considered the most successful players to have suited up for the U.S. men’s national basketball team.
