Russell Westbrook Has Bad News for Denver Nuggets Fans

June 14, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

Last summer, Russell Westbrook signed a two-year deal with the Denver Nuggets for $6.8 million and a player option for the second year. During his time in Denver, Westbrook quickly became a fan favorite because of his relentless play and chemistry with Nikola Jokic. But it seems like that might be coming to an end as Westbrook is scheduled to become a free agent. According to the latest reports, Russell Westbrook is set to decline his player option for the 2025-26 season and become a free agent.

The 36-year-old Westbrook averaged 13.3 points on 44.9% shooting for the Nuggets this past season. He also added 6.1 assists and 4.9 rebounds in almost 30 minutes of action. During his time in Denver, Russ appeared in 75 games, starting 36.

Notably, Russ has played 17 seasons in the league, but this will be only the second time he enters free agency. He has been traded to several teams throughout his career, but he wasn’t a free agent in the summer until last year. Yes, he was bought out by the Jazz, but that was mid-season.

Can the Nuggets Bring Russell Westbrook Back as a Free Agent?

There is always the possibility that Westbrook will sign with the Denver Nuggets again as a free agent. He might be looking for a longer contract. However, we have to note that over the years, the Nuggets have been reluctant to spend deep into the tax for multiple years in a row. The new Collective Bargaining Agreements make it hard for teams to improve once they get into the tax.

Right now, Denver has $199 million in committed salary for the 2025-26 season. Take out Westbrook’s $3.4 million, but they will still be over the luxury tax. For next season, the projected salary cap is at $154 million, with the tax set at $187.9 million. The first apron for the 2025-26 season will be at $195 million, while the second will be at $207 million.

The Nuggets, as it stands right now, can offer Russ the taxpayer mid-level exception, projected at somewhere around $5.7 million. That will still be more than he made this year. However, the Nuggets often try to avoid the tax. On top of it, they have to decide what they will do with Cristian Braun, whether they will give him an extension, or use the team option on him. Peyton Watson is also up for an extension.

Do Teams Still Want Westbrook

Westbrook will be a free agent in probably the best summer for his age and contributions. He had a stellar season last year with the Nuggets and might be looking to cash in on that. However, at this point, Russ is looking to contend. And not many contenders need a player of his caliber.

In the Eastern Conference, teams that might need some bench help are the New York Knicks, Miami Heat, and Detroit Pistons. In the West, the Nuggets would certainly love to have him back. Teams like the Minnesota Timberwolves could also use his services. This season, he upped his minutes averages from 22 to 27, meaning he is seeking a bigger role. It is hard to imagine Westbrook accepting a role playing 10 to 15 minutes per game. And there are not many contenders willing to give him that many minutes.
