The Dallas Mavericks’ Jason Kidd and the Chicago Bulls’ Billy Donovan are two the New York might circle back to in the coming weeks, according to league sources. The belief around the league is that Kidd and Donovan are looking for contract extensions from their current franchises, and if those don’t materialize, they might be open to joining the Knicks.

“The Knicks made permission requests over the last 24-48 hours on Chris Finch of the Minnesota Timberwolves, Ime Udoka of the Houston Rockets and this morning, Jason Kidd of the Dallas Mavericks. All three were given swift denials.”

The NBA Draft is around the corner ( June 25th) -I’m watching a ton of tape and reading draft reports from various sites…the Bulls, should they stay at 12, will get a good player that will be a solid piece going forward. Billy Donovan did a superb job – 9:26 AM

Sources: The Mavericks strongly believe that Jason Kidd will remain in Dallas (and not coach the Knicks). They’re telling people that quite loudly, too.

Jason Kidd to the Knicks? He left Dallas for New York once as a player. This time, there are signs he’ll stay put with the Mavericks.

Lu Dort: There was a small moment about five years ago, when I realized Shai was like no joke. This was in the 2019–2020 season, before the bubble. I was a rookie, and Shai had just been traded to OKC at the time, with Chris Paul and Dennis Schröder and those guys. It all goes back to this one night in Detroit. I remember Coach Donovan had called a timeout, and we were in the huddle. Shai was one of the youngest players on the team, but I think he was already our best scorer. And I don’t know who was calling the play, but basically, the ball wasn’t going to Shai. Shai’s a chill dude. He didn’t get mad or anything. He just kept it real. He was like, “Let me get a couple plays,” or something like that. A young player saying that at the time was like, Oh. He wasn’t out of pocket or anything, it was just bold. It would’ve been one thing if he had said it and gone out and got a few buckets. But it was Shai, so he went on like a 12–0 run by himself. I was like, That’s real. -via The Players’ Tribune / June 5, 2025
So what happens now? For starters, sources said, there’s some belief that things could change in the cases of Kidd in Dallas and Donovan in Chicago. Kidd has a long history of fiery departures from prior stops — including in 2014, when he wound up getting permission to leave the Brooklyn Nets to join the Bucks. Kidd also has a lot of relationships in New York from his year playing there in 2012-13 and has a relationship with Jalen Brunson from coaching him in Dallas before the guard came to New York three years ago as a free agent. -via ESPN / June 13, 2025
James L. Edwards: Another thing to consider with Knicks-Mavs-Kidd: multiple reports say DAL officially denied permission. If somehow this turns into a mess and this isn’t the end, which I’m hearing it might not be, hard to see how the NBA doesn’t intervene with tampering stuff. -via Bluesky / June 11, 2025
