Boston, you’re next.
The New York Knicks punched their tickets to the second round of the NBA playoffs on Thursday, beating the Detroit Pistons on the road.
The Knicks will get their matchup against the Celtics going on Monday after putting notching a 116-113 win in Motor City with Captain Clutch (who else?) playing hero.
Here’s what Coach Thibs and many other Knickerbockers and Cancuners said after yesterday’s affair.
Tom Thibodeau on the upcoming Knicks-Celtics series:
“We’ll be doing a lot of work in the next couple days. They’re the defending champions so we know we’re going to have to be at our best” pic.twitter.com/PAt2v6bqk5

Tom Thibodeau
On Brunson’s performance:
“He’s at his best when his best is needed, and he’s done it all year. That’s what makes him special.”
On Towns’ involvement:
“Well, the thing is, they’re loaded up pretty good. Read the game, the game tells you what to do. You’ve gotta keep moving, we’ve gotta search them out him out. We know we’ve gotta play – we try to get out in transition a little more so we can attack before they’re set. When we can create turnovers and get into the open floor, it opens things up for us.”
On the toughness of the playoffs:
“Hang tough, persevere, get through things. The playoffs, it’s all about your toughness and your discipline. There’s gonna be a lot of emotional highs and lows, you gotta get through all that. You gotta stay focused on the task at hand. And then you gotta get the job done.”
On the team’s growth:
“I think you learn from every game. You have to take the things you learn and move forward. What are the games teaching us? Sometimes you fall short. And if you fall short, study, learn and do it better the next time. That’s a big part of mental toughness.”
Jalen Brunson on his game-winner tonight against the Pistons:
“Just found a way to create some separation, shot it a little earlier than I wanted to… happy the ball went in” pic.twitter.com/nvjpHjOn7e

Jalen Brunson
On what it will take against Boston:
“Playoff basketball. We’ve been playing the same [team] for now, this is the sixth time. I’m pretty sure they know us and we know them. We’re in a position now where we need to just go out and just earn it. It’s not going to be given to us. They’re not gonna hand anything over. We gotta go out there and play the best we can regardless of what’s happening. It’s never gonna be easy. We’ve just gotta go out there and go get it.”
On his role in getting others involved:
“I feel like I’m bringing up the ball, I have the ball most of the time, so it starts with me.”
On nailing the final shot:
“Just found a way to create some separation. Shot it a little earlier than I wanted to, but I mean, Ausar is a great defender and the fact that I got that much space, I had to shoot it right there. Happy the ball went in.
“It’s all about us staying poised and having that composure. Obviously, we want to have it throughout the game, but it’s most important at the end.”
On his instincts during the final play:
“I don’t really go and think, ‘All right, I’m gonna make this move right here.’ It’s just instinct. He beat me to the spot. He cut me off. Just went back the other way, and I found a lot of space, and I was able to take a shot.”
On crediting teammates:
“I stay poised and I rely on the trust and composure that my teammates give me. I wouldn’t be in that position without this man next to me [Bridges], the way he played tonight. Obviously, everyone’s gonna say a lot about the last shot, but throughout the game, the ups and downs of it, we all stayed composed and the way he played it was tremendous. So, gotta give a lot of credit to my teammates. None of this happens without them.”
On Detroit’s push through the series and up till the last moment:
“They brought the fight to us and we had to respond.”
On trusting his team:
“We all have each other’s backs and we all know what we want to do and I’m just thankful for my teammates and coaches.”
On his health after his recent injury scares:
“I’ve been fine. I got back in the game. Not on the injury report. I’m all good.”
Josh Hart on advancing on the road:
“That’s one of the best feelings in sports, is going into a hostile environment of an opposing team and silencing them.” pic.twitter.com/WFIkRABu1f

On Mikal Bridges’ impact in Game 6:
“Everyone out there contributed at the end of the game. Huge shout-out to Kal. The shot wasn’t falling in this series but he was doing everything else. He was guarding and his defense was amazing in this series. With 30 seconds left had one of the biggest plays with that effort tip-in. JB’s shot was huge, but big credit to him for keeping it up and keeping mentally strong and playing his game.”
On Mitchell Robinson’s free throws and the Hack-A-Mitch strategy:
“No. Mitch a grown man. Mitch knows how important he is to this team. I’m not sure what the numbers are, but [from] my perception, he’s been shooting free throws very well. So if they’re gonna do that, let them. We’re gonna get stops, and he’s so important to us defensively. Even if he makes one out of two, if we get five stops and he makes five free throws, we’re plus-five. It’s a chess game. I’ve got trust in my guys.”
On the Knicks’ resilience:
“We’re a tough group. Everyone likes to paint us as not, but we’re a tough, physical group. This was a physical series. It was a grueling series. And I think we showed our physicality, our toughness, but also our mental toughness. The way we handled adversity. During those adverse situations, we banded together. We didn’t play as individuals. It was a great series for us.”
On what he does to stay healthy:
“Prayer and faith.”
On the tired criticism of Tom Thibodeau:
“He’s used to it. Bull’s-eye on his back for that. He’s got a bull’s-eye on his back the whole season for minutes, rotations and all of that stuff. That’s our coach. We’re going to back him 100%. Everyone is on this team because we have faith and trust in them, and I think that’s a byproduct of that. We got stops. We got good looks. What more do you want besides getting stops and getting good looks for good players? I don’t know.”
On being overtired as the lone Eastern team to go six games deep:
“Nah, we don’t think about that. That’s just kind of that ongoing debate with never really much proof. We can sit there and be like, we play six or seven games, we’re in a good flow of stuff, they’re off for a week. They’re not in rhythm. It don’t matter. It doesn’t matter. At the end of the day we’ve got to take care of what we’ve got to take care of.”
“Give those teams (who clinched earlier) credit. They played tough series and were able to come out in four or five games. I don’t think any of us thought this series is going to be a cakewalk. This is a heck of a team over there with a really good coach and coaching staff. We respect them. So we’ve just got to make sure we focus on that. The other teams can get rest, it’s cool for them, you know. We’ve got to make sure we take care of what we can take care of and control.”
Mikal Bridges on Jalen Brunson’s game-winner:
“When he shot it and made it I felt like I made it, I was so geeked up. You would’ve thought I hit the game-winner” pic.twitter.com/J5cDxaOZuX

On playing fast and seeing the results:
“Just being aggressive. Us playing fast, knowing the weapons we have, just trying to be aggressive. They tried to take them away and we have to punish them sometimes when they deny [Brunson] and let other guys play. Just trying to play the right way and try to win.”
On his mindset during final minutes:
“We built for this s–t. That’s all it is.
“Sorry, sorry, but we built for it. That’s all it was. Stayed with it, stayed positive and just stayed fighting. That’s all I know. That’s all we know.”
On Brunson’s game-winner:
“Once he got separation, I knew it was curtains. When he shot it and made it, I felt like I made it. I was so geeked up.
“You would’ve thought I hit the game-winner.”
On his putback tip-in:
“The putback, just trying to find a way to win. Just being there. My coaches been on me all year, all playoffs to rebound. Just try to do my best. I love my teammates. Try to go out there and make a play. I play for them.”
Karl-Anthony Towns on advancing:
“I think this game shows a little bit of how our season has gone, we’ve kind of made it difficult on ourselves. We’ve always taken the toughest path to getting the job done” pic.twitter.com/h63xXyJnPC

On Bridges’ dunk:
“Big time. He got a left-hand dunk. I don’t think anyone in New York thought he was going to pull that off. Shoutout to him, man. We all found a way to help our team win… a great job from all of us in this locker room, executing, staying disciplined, staying emotionally involved in this game. With so many ups and downs, anyone in this locker room could have let go of the rope, but that’s not how we’re built.”
On watching Brunson’s final shot:
“I was wondering if it was gonna be a swish or he was gonna hit some part of the rim.”

On his dreams of playing wide receiver vaporizing at the end of Game 6:
“This is tough. I had a chance to make a 3 and tie the game. I’m mad about that.”
J.B. Bickerstaff on Ausar Thompson guarding Jalen Brunson on the game-winner:
“He’s guarding one of the most difficult matchups in the NBA. You gotta tip your hat to Brunson. He’s hard to guard. How he can generate space at his size is remarkable” pic.twitter.com/hXMyiL4mqI

On the Game 6 result and entering the Gone Fishin’ club:
“We did so many things well and gave ourselves a chance. They just made one more play than we did.”
