Boston keeps playing the numbers game while New York keeps simply winning them.
The Knicks might not play Chef Curry’s game, but one thing they sure do is beat three-point shooters.
New York played basketball for a second road game in Boston and, well, sorry to inform my Beantowners, but the Knicks won once more, 91-90 in regulation this time.
Here’s what Coach Thibs and a few other folks have said in the past few hours.
“Always have the belief in each other”

Tom Thibodeau
On Mikal Bridges’ impact:
“I think one of the things I really respect about (Bridges) is his demeanor. He just keeps marching forward. He doesn’t get too high, he doesn’t get too low, but he’s a great competitor. He just finds ways to help us win. If your shot’s not dropping, play great defense, move without the ball, push the ball up the floor.”
On the emotional nature of the playoffs:
“That’s the challenge for everybody. I think in the playoffs, that’s sort of the nature of the beast. It’s very emotional, there are great highs, there are lows. You have to navigate both, and no matter what happens, you don’t carry it over into the next game. You have to reset and be ready to do it all over again.”
On the importance of teamwork and identity:
“Teamwork is what wins. It’s not the individual player as much as it is ‘how does the team function together’ and ‘how do they bring the best out of each other?’ And, when you think about the playoffs, the teams that are successful: It’s defense, it’s toughness, and it’s teamwork. You have to do this together. It’s very difficult to do individually.”
On the team’s mindset in Game 2:
“Always have the belief in each other. It’s about your mental toughness, defense, your teamwork, and always having the belief that you could do something better and find a way to win. It’s a long game, keep playing, and that’s what they did.”
On the final defensive possession in Game 2:
“There was good team defense on that. There was a swarm. Tatum is so tough when gets any speed and he’s going downhill, so you need bodies in front of him. And then the pursuit from behind is also important.”
On the team’s toughness in Game 2:
“We started slow, got in a big hole, dug our way out, and then guys made a lot of tough plays. They were at their best when their best was needed down the stretch.”
On the defensive effort and rebounding:
“Our defense was outstanding and that’s what we need to do for the entire game. Now, we’re still really concerned about the rebounding. We have to fix that.”
On the need for improving rebounding and shot discipline:
“We know we have to play for 48 minutes against them. If you give them open shots, they’re gonna make them. If you give them a second crack at it, they’re gonna make you pay.”
On Jalen Brunson’s upbringing and development:
“I believe the relationship definitely benefits him. He’s gained a lot by having his father in the pro league. Just being around a pro gym his entire life with pros. I believe the way he’s made up, he’s a sponge. He’s been a student of the game, and he’s never content; he’s always looking to improve.”
On Brunson’s basketball upbringing under Rick’s wing:
“Just being around a pro gym with pros his entire life, he understands what it takes.”
On Brunson’s mentality and growth:
“He’s been a student of the game, and he’s never satisfied. That’s what makes him special.”
“I wouldn’t be that way without my teammates.”

On the wild finish in Game 2:
“I don’t know but I’m just happy that we found a way to win. That’s some wild stuff right there.”
On blocking out pressure at the free-throw line:
“I got up there, heard the noise and I just tried to block everything out. And then made two.”
On team confidence:
“We always have confidence in our team. Unfortunately, again, we put ourselves in a position, but if we’ve shown anything to the NBA and to the fans, we’re a gritty team and we’re just gonna keep fighting to the last one.”
On staying mentally focused:
“It’s a focus that I need to have in that element. Can’t really worry about what happened previously in the game. It’s all about focusing and having a clear mind, just trying to win the game. That’s just my mindset. I wouldn’t be able to without my teammates.”
On his crunch-time mindset:
“Play to the final whistle. Can’t really explain, but we have to give each other confidence when we go through stretches like that and just keep fighting, keep moving.”
On the meaning behind his No. 11 jersey:
“Not going to lie, we don’t really talk about this that much, but seeing little kids wear No. 11 around the Garden, it’s a special feeling and I didn’t want to change my number.”
On the Knicks’ clutch prowess:
“No matter what happens, we’re going to be together as a team. And we’re going to have each other’s back regardless. It doesn’t matter what a single person or us collectively are going through.”
On the mindset for Game 3 heading into MSG:
“Going home and realizing the opportunity that we have, just gotta make sure we’re still locked in. Know we’re close to being done, just make sure our mindset is the same.”
“When you’re not making shots, you’ve got to find ways to impact the game in a positive way”

On the fire alarm at TD Garden:
“No one else is worried about that? Aight.”
On Mitchell Robinson’s free-throw shooting and impact:
“He knows how important he is to this team. I don’t know what the numbers are, but from my perception, he’s been shooting free throws very well. If they’re going to do that, let them do that. We’ll get stops. He’s so important to us defensively. Even if he makes one out of two, if we get five stops in a row and they foul him five times in a row and he makes five free throws, then we’re a plus-5. We got faith in him on both sides of the court.”
“If we’ve shown anything to the NBA and to the fans, we’re a gritty team and we’re just gonna keep fighting to the last one.”

Karl-Anthony Towns
On the Game 2 victory and the Knicks’ identity:
“I mean we always have confidence in our team. Unfortunately, again, we put ourselves in a position, but if we’ve shown anything to the NBA and to the fans, we’re a gritty team and we’re just gonna keep fighting to the last one.”
On the mindset after taking a commanding 2-0 lead:
“It means we up two zip, but it doesn’t really mean anything. We can’t take anything for granted, we gotta find ourselves executing at a higher level. We can’t keep doing these 20-point leads for Boston and hope to come back and win the game. We gotta play better, we gotta shoot better, we gotta execute better. We can’t start having that Knicks basketball being played down 20, we gotta start the game that way and finish the game that way.”
On rebounding efforts and sparking a furious comeback:
“The ball found me. I was just trying to be aggressive and scoring and I got some good opportunities. To start the third [quarter], I saw how our energy was, I wanted to kind of bring a spark. I think being able to hit those early shots allows us to understand we’re in the game, and we started the third quarter better than we did last game.”
On contributing to the win:
“Just seeing how the game was playing out, I wanted to make sure I did everything I could to put our team in a position to win. In the first half, I was trying to do that. In the second half, didn’t want us to come out sluggish. I wanted to be a catalyst for energy.”
“They helped me up, throughout the whole, me missing every shot until that point. It’s really truly them, just holding me together and keeping me mentally right and just telling me to keep going”

Mikal Bridges
On staying confident during the Knicks comeback:
“I think we’re just confident, confident knowing we’re just always gonna find a way. A lot of us sit on the bench while we’re down just like, ‘We’ve been here before, pretty sure we’re gonna win this game.’”
On fighting through shooting struggles:
“I feel like I’m pretty mentally strong, but it was wearing on me a little bit, just missing shots. It’s really just missing shots is affecting us. I’m trying to win the game, and me missing is not going to help us.”

On motivating Mikal Bridges:
“I can’t tell ya’ll what I said. After the season.”

On his approach to Game 2:
“Just be better than the last game [was my mindset]. Came in with high energy, because I knew they would come out aggressive. I had to make some adjustments myself.”
On the meaning of being intentionally fouled:
“Actually, that makes me feel like I’m a threat. You want me out the game. I’m just saying, you trying to get me out the game? Why do you want me out the game?”
On defending Tatum in the final possession:
“Pretty epic. He’s a great player, so I did whatever it takes to get it done.”
On the Knicks’ mindset going forward:
“The jobs not done. We just gonna leave it at that and continue to play basketball.”
“Just kept fighting, kept believing in each other”

On the Knicks’ resiliency in their comeback win:
“Just kept fighting, kept believing in each other.”
On the haters and the doubters:
“A lot of people outside of our locker room are going to say whatever and we’re just going to stay locked-in to the one goal of bringing home a championship.”
Joe Mazzulla on not calling a timeout on the last play:
“Had one left, got a good look on the exact same play 20 seconds earlier. Tried to execute the exact same thing, they did a better job of their lower pickup point.” pic.twitter.com/PUgMOwriQe

Joe Mazzulla
On lack of Game 2 execution:
“We put ourselves in position to [win], and we just didn’t make the plays.”
On the Celtics’ shot selection failing them once again:
“I thought we executed and got some really good looks that we missed and then I thought we had some live ball turnovers, just making the wrong read. I would say it’s about 60–40 where we got some open looks, we’ve got to make them and then we’ve got to do a better job executing, especially not having live ball turnovers.”
On his late-game decision-making without calling a timeout:
“Had one left, got a good look on the exact same play 20 seconds earlier. Tried to execute the exact same thing, they did a better job of their lower pickup point. So, good full-court setting, they subbed out (Karl-Anthony) Towns, weren’t able to sub out Brunson, had action there, and just didn’t execute.”
On the Celtics’ overall shot quality:
“To me, I look at the process and the shot quality. So our shot quality was high. The points in the paint were even. We shot one more layup than they did. We shot 10 non-paint 2s. They shot much more than that. So you have to take a look at the process of what we’re trying to accomplish, and we were able to accomplish good results for the most part.”
On the missed late-game opportunity:
“I thought he had a good look at an angle. Didn’t shoot it, so he ran out of time.”
On the Celtics’ failure to close both games:
“The (Knicks) made every play … I thought we generated some good looks and then I thought we had some live-ball turnovers and they took advantage of it, so they made the necessary plays to win. We put ourselves in position and we just didn’t make the plays.”
Kristaps Porzingis on going into game 3:
“In a way it kinda takes all the pressure off of us. If you check the odds maybe the Knicks are the favorites now to win.” pic.twitter.com/nZe277Peri

Kristaps Porzingis
On the illness impacting his play:
“I’m just not feeling my best. Not feeling my best at all. It just kills me inside (that) it’s happening in this moment.
“My energy, my everything, hasn’t been good, but who cares. I have to look forward and [hope] it will get better from this point on.”
On the Game 2 being a close loss:
“At the end it’s almost a gamble if the game is that close.”
On not feeling any pressure after going down 2-0:
“I don’t have the answer honestly, I don’t have the answer. Just a little bit of execution here and there. There’s a couple missed shots here and there. A couple things go their way and it just adds up and it’s this result.
“In a way, it kind of takes all the pressure off of us. I don’t know, if you check the odds, maybe the Knicks are the favorites now to win. Who knows? We were expected to win, so for us to be in this hole right now—with our backs against the wall, we have nothing to lose.”
Jaylen Brown on blowing 2 games at home:

Jaylen Brown
On the team’s failure to close:
“Two games we’re up 20 points somehow end up not with wins is inexcusable. Obviously being down two, it sucks.”
On team mentality heading to Game 3:
“What’s done is done. We’ve got to make sure we’re ready to come out for Game 3. I think we’re due for a lot of makes. I think we had a lot of great shots tonight that didn’t go in. We’ve just got to relax, take a deep breath and play Celtics basketball. Just like we’re down 0-2, we can tie this thing back up.”
On the mistakes made in Game 2:
“(It’s) a bunch of stuff that we can control. I feel like we played a little bit fast and sped up a little antsy. Just it’s a rough night.”
On the Celtics needing to respond quickly:
“Being down 0-2 it sucks, but we got a great group. We just gotta come out, be a little bit more poised, take a deep breath, convert our opportunities – we missed layups, easy baskets – take advantage. Two games we were up 20 points somehow ended up not with wins. It’s inexcusable, but we gonna learn from it, we gonna respond.”
