If you were born after June 2, 2000, you have never witnessed what will happen Wednesday.
New York will host Eastern Conference Finals games for the first time since forever.
The Knicks will face the Indiana Hicks in the nth matchup between both teams, most of them ending in favor of the farmers, at least of late.
Here’s what Coach Thibs and some other folks said after the Knicks held their first practice in Tarrytown on Monday ahead of Wednesday’s Game 1 inside MSG.
“You do the best that you can given the circumstances that you have”

Tom Thibodeau
On the Pacers’ structure and their offense:
“I think you look at what the strengths of your team are and you build your system around that. Haliburton has certain strengths. I think if you overlook the type of player that [Andrew] Nembhard is, you are making a mistake. And then, you build your system around that. … The uniqueness [is] their ability to push the ball and skilled bigs.”
On Indiana’s deep rotation:
“I think that’s one of their strengths. We have to understand who’s coming in, what they do well, and be ready to match up with all of them. That’s what goes into winning — preparation, knowing their personnel, and knowing your own strengths and weaknesses.”
On his top-heavy rotation compared to Indiana’s 10-man squad:
“I can’t speak for them. They have to do what’s best for their team. I felt like what we did was best for ours. You condition yourself for what you want your body to do — and our guys have prepared themselves for that.”
On adjusting year to year:
“I think you have to study your team. You have to study the strengths and weaknesses of your team. Each team is different, and I think that’s the challenge that you have every year. Whether it’s draft picks, trades, free agency, whatever it might be, or maybe you get back a player who was injured the previous year, and then the challenge is how do you put it together and you have to get on the same page as quickly as possible. Sometimes you fall short, and you have to make sure that you’re making your corrections and moving forward. You always want to be moving forward and you never want to be satisfied with where you are, and you always have to have the belief that you can do something better.”
On that WWE segment and media narratives:
“That’s for you guys. We have great respect for Indiana, Tyrese. We understand what we have to do. But I think where we are today, that’s part of the league. But I try to focus on the basketball part.”

Jalen Brunson
On the 2024 playoff loss to Indiana:
“I mean, it still kind of bothers me. Obviously it was a missed opportunity last year playing them at home in Game 7, regardless of who we had out there.”
On what still bothers him about the 2024 series:
“That we lost.”
On the Knicks’ mindset and immediate goals:
“For us, we know there’s a long way to go and so we don’t really look at it as an accomplishment. It’s just the next step. We’re grateful, we’re thankful and we know there’s a long way to go.”
On what the Knicks must do defensively against Indiana:
“Yeah, obviously the way we played, we showed we have the ability to do it. We’re going to have to communicate, talk and do whatever we’ve got to do against this team too because they’re going to run, they’re going to play fast on makes and misses. That’s just in their DNA. It’s going to be a long way to go. We’ve got to have each other’s back. We’ve got to stick together. Nothing’s going to be perfect but our talk, our energy has to be consistent.”
On the WWE experience with Haliburton:
“It was a cool experience for both of us. It’s just something that you check off your bucket list.”
On Haliburton’s skills and the upcoming series:
“Great player. He’s done a lot. He’s quieted a lot of people. Obviously, he’s their engine, and they go as he goes. He does a lot for their team. So yeah, it’s going to be a tough task. But for us, it’s about sticking together, doing what we do, and controlling what we can control.”
On trusting his teammates:
“[We have to] control what we can control. Whatever happens, happens. I have the utmost faith in our guys — regardless of how many we play or don’t play. [It] doesn’t matter to me.”
Josh Hart is asked about how the Pacers reacted to defeating the Knicks last year:
“If you win, you can do what you want. Everybody embraces being in that spotlight differently. If that’s how they want to do it, cool.” pic.twitter.com/MCclCCkniL

On the revenge narrative going around:
“Another year, another series. Y’all can write whatever y’all want, make it into a revenge thing or something like that. Half the team didn’t play last year. [Julius Randle] and Donte [DiVincenzo] aren’t here anymore. [Isaiah Hartenstein] isn’t here. We’ve got KAT [Karl-Anthony Towns], Mikal [Bridges], OG [Anunoby] was hurt—it’s just a totally different team, totally different situation, totally different round of the playoffs. We just gotta make sure we’re ready.”
On the Brunson-Haliburton matchup:
“They are two of the best point guards, not just in the East, but in this league. It’s going to be fun. They both have different playing styles. JB is more of a scoring guard, Tyrese runs an offense, gets guys involved, pushes the pace, those types of things. It’s going to be a back-and-forth matchup, a chess game. But both guys are extremely talented. Looking forward to that.”
On defending Indiana:
“We have to try to be physical, get to the ball, get them out of rhythm and lastly communicate so they don’t have open shots. It’s going to be a huge defensive series for us. I think we’re capable of it. We’re communicating at a higher level. I think the last two games of the Boston series without [Jayson] Tatum, they were moving the ball a little bit faster, they were running quicker. It forced us to communicate at a high level. I think that’s something that can help us going into this series with Indiana.”
On playoff mentality and Mitch Robinson’s effort:
“I think when it’s playoff time, you want to do everything it takes to win. And I think you saw that all over the place the last couple of series. Obviously, that one huge Mitch [Robinson] possession that he kind of rotated on everyone. He rotated on one guy, somebody already stepped up for him. It was just a domino effect. Everybody wants to win, and we’re locked in on that. We’re communicating at a higher level. I think the last two games of the Boston series without [Jayson] Tatum, they were moving the ball a little bit faster, they were running quicker. It forced us to communicate at a high level. I think that’s something that can help us going into this series with Indiana.”
On Indiana’s shooting:
“You’ve got to try to make them uncomfortable. We looked at the numbers and I think they got four or five guys, six guys, that are shooting 40s, 50s [from three-point range]. It’s going to be obviously a tough matchup. We have to try to be physical, get to the ball, get them out of rhythm and lastly communicate, so they don’t have open shots. It’s going to be a huge series for us. I think we’re capable of it.”
On last year’s loss and Turner’s celebration:
“Did it bother me? At the end of the day, if you win, you can really do what you want. I think everybody embraces being in that spotlight differently. If that’s how they want to do it, cool. But for me? Obviously, it was a tough series for us physically — especially that Game 7. I was hurt and couldn’t play how I wanted to. But I know I gave everything I possibly could’ve given.”
On the team focus going forward:
“We just gotta make sure we’re ready. That’s an extremely talented team whose offense is clicking on all cylinders right now. Nothing about revenge — it’s just about the next series.”
On the need to trust teammates and helping Thibs rotating players when needed:
“We just have to trust each other, communicate at a high level. And when guys are tired, we’ve got to be honest and ask for a sub. Just trust our body.”
On not losing focus after beating Boston:
“We’ve been saying all year: Not everything was about beating the Boston Celtics. They were this, they were that. It was always being who we are. Being the best we can be. Because when you’re so focused on beating Boston or beating a certain opponent, when you do beat them, then you feel like you’re on top of the mountain and then you have to try to figure out what to do next. For us, it never was that.”

On his relationship with Jalen Brunson:
“I’ve been knowing him since he’s been like 2 (years old). He was two years old when his dad was bringing him around us.
“I took the Knicks to Jamaica on a vacation. I remember seeing videos of little Jalen with my little kids just walking around the islands, and my daughter Randi carrying him around on her back.”
“Last year the series was a lot of fun…Going in they didn’t like the organization but I don’t think there were certain guys the fans didn’t like…Now they don’t really like us too much I look forward to playing in that building”

On contrasting play styles with Knicks:
“It’s definitely a contrast of styles. They play a slower, more methodical way, a lot through [Brunson]. We move the ball more, play a lot more guys. It’s definitely different styles here, but I think that’s what makes our game beautiful.”
On his role as point guard:
“Being the point guard is like being the mom. Your job is to take care of everybody.”
On inviting the Pacers fan bullied by Knicks fans after Game 6 to a game in Indianapolis:
“Pat (McAfee) told me he found you yesterday and called me and said I got to get on the show and talk to you myself.
“I want to personally bring you and a plus one out here to come to Game 4 here in Indiana. I’ll bring you guys out here. Put you guys up, give you guys seats to the game.
“The Pacers, everyone in the organization wants to make sure to care of you. The whole team is excited to meet you; it’s all we’ve been talking about. Everyone’s seen the video so we want to bring you out here.”
On his WWE appearance:
“Obviously a lifelong dream of mine to do anything with WWE. To do it there and be booed and all that stuff was a lot of fun.”
Rick Carlisle on Mitchell Robinson: “His productivity as a rebounder is really quite remarkable…4 offensive rebounds & tips out another 3-4…7-8 extra possessions. Major factor. The other guy people don’t talk enough about is Achiuwa…another big…crash & generate possessions” pic.twitter.com/dGP7E9AG6l

On the December 2023 trade when the Knicks acquired OG Anunoby and Achiuwa:
“I think obviously it’s a difficult day. Changes and things happen like that, it’s never easy. It’s the NBA, I’ve seen these things happen.”
On OG Anunoby (right after the trade):
“OG obviously a big part of what we’ve done here, and he’s an incredible human being, and a great player. For me when all these things happen I just wish the best for everyone, I hope incredible things happen to him and he gets everything that he wants and deserves.”
On Precious Achiuwa (right after the trade):
“Precious [was] coming in trying to find his stride, trying to find a way, and all I can do is really wish him the best. That’s the NBA, you got to keep going.”

On Brunson vs. Haliburton:
“(Jalen) Brunson is (a superstar). Not (Tyrese) Haliburton.
“(Haliburton) is not overrated, he can play and he can close and I give him mad credit for that. But he’s not a superstar.
“When you consider the undersized Brunson, the load that he carries…(Haliburton) isn’t asked to do as much to carry (the Pacers’) offense as Brunson does.”
Paul Pierce
On having the OKC Thunder as his favorite for the title:
“This team, nobody is giving any credit because of how young they are and they haven’t got the respect. They got my respect. After watching them through a seven-game series. This series proved to me that they’re finally battle-tested. This battle-tested them. They went toe-to-toe with the best player in the NBA and showed them who’s boss. I think they’re gonna win it all.”
On the Knicks’ playoff luck:
“In order to win a title, you have to be good and lucky… you have to have a little luck on your side and the Knicks got lucky.”
