New York can make this a win-and-in affair. Boston can turn the series into a best-of-three. High stakes!
The Knicks have a historic chance on Monday to move up to a 3-1 series lead and make it a heellaciously tough task for the Celtics to beat them on their way to the Eastern Conference Finals.
New York will be hosting Game 4, and the least thing the dudes wearing Orange and Blue threads tonight is paying the MSG crowd back after the Game 3 disaster.
Here’s what Coach Thibs and a few other folks have said leading up to the fourth game.
“No one’s gonna shoot great every night. There’s gonna be nights you don’t shoot it that well, but do other things to help the team win.”

Tom Thibodeau
On the Knicks’ home struggles:
“I think you look at each game by itself. You say, ‘OK, we didn’t lose the game because we were at home. We lost the game because we didn’t do enough things to win the game.’ So look at those things. What do you need to do to win that particular game — whether it’s home or road? And really, that shouldn’t matter. Understand what you have to put into winning.”
On live-ball turnovers and offense:
“I think for anybody, live-ball turnovers that put you into the open floor, get you easy baskets. So that’s a big part of the game, and that’s the fight. I think it’s the challenge for each team to try to create as many as you can, because you know what it does for your offense. It fuels your offense.”
On OG Anunoby’s offensive dip:
“The hard thing is we gotta get stops so we can get out in the open floor, create easy shots for each other. The first game, a lot was created off of the pace of the game, where we were able to create. He made six 3s in that game, so he’s getting a lot of attention [now]. He’s not getting the same room he had in the first game. He’ll get some baskets.”
On Towns’ injury status ahead of Game 4:
“He’s fine.”
On the emotional toll of the playoffs:
“I think that’s the challenge of the playoffs. The playoffs are going to challenge you in a lot of different ways. You can get knocked down. You got to get back up. Got to keep fighting. Emotionally the playoffs are a roller coaster.”
On playoff readiness:
“The challenge is that you have to be ready for every game. And I think that’s what the playoffs are about. You know, the intensity, the force, the aggression, and you have to understand what goes into winning each game.”
On physical demands of the playoffs:
“That’s why you do it the entire season. No one’s playing 100 percent. You have to understand that you can play well when you’re feeling less than your best, that’s all part of it. I think the mental toughness part of this in the playoffs is huge.”
On the need to put together a full 48 minutes of good basketball:
“You have to earn your wins. You have to put the work into winning. We knew coming in [that] they were going to be coming in with force, and we’ve got to make sure that we’re ready for that. And you know — we’ve got to play a strong 48 minutes of basketball.”
On the Celtics’ shooting rhythm taking advantage of New York’s early misses:
“That probably gave them confidence early. The one thing that you can’t be is you can’t be indecisive against them because of the five-out [offense with five shooters on the floor].”
On giving up second-chance threes:
“When [a three] is shot, you have to get to bodies and make sure you’re not giving them a second or third crack at it. And then, there were four or five loose balls they were able to get that turned into threes for them. We have to understand how important that is.”
On missed shots:
“We missed some shots early and we got back on our heels, and that hurt us some. Then, we missed some wide open shots, and you gotta make shots.”
Josh Hart was asked what he thought of the Knicks’ pick and roll defense, particularly in the first half:
“It was not what it should’ve been. We should’ve been more physical, more aggressive.” pic.twitter.com/AACOy0dNie

On the Knicks’ home struggles:
“I don’t know [why]. I can’t pinpoint one thing. The fans are coming out and supporting and showing love, and we’ve got to make sure that’s not wasted. We’ve just got to watch the film, we’ve got to get better, and we know that they’ll come out again Monday.”
On pushing the Knicks to play faster:
“We got guys that can make plays, guys that can shoot the ball, guys that can finish at the rim. So for sure that’s when our offense is firing on all cylinders. We’re able to get out and get everybody easy shots, easy baskets and get everyone into the flow of things. And when you’re not causing turnovers and you’re getting the ball under the rim, taking it out every possession, it’s tough to have that speed, so we have to try to cause more turnovers, play better defense and finish possessions with rebounds and run, and even when we do take the ball out, have pace to our offense and not just be standing around being so stagnant.”
On the Knicks’ slow starts:
“I think a big part of that is how we’re starting games and starting the second half. We haven’t done a good job imposing our will into the game from the jump. That’s something that we struggled with in Detroit also, coming out of the half. There were times we had a 10-, 12-point lead and then we surrendered it in the first three, four minutes of the half. That unit, we have to come out with more sense of urgency, more desperation, more competitiveness and let everything else fall into place.”
On Game 4 urgency:
“It’s the playoffs. What we did last game wasn’t acceptable. It’s the playoffs, it’s what you always dream about being in, in these situations. We have to come out with that sense or urgency. We can talk about it, but at the end of the day, it comes from a player’s heart. I think we’ll be ready [Monday].”
On Karl-Anthony Towns’ injury:
“He’s fine. It’s the playoffs, man. Everyone’s banged up. Everyone has nicks and bruises.”
On supposedly failing in clutch situations in Game 3:
“The clutch moments? I don’t think there were many clutch moments last game.”
On the team mentality after the Game 3 loss:
“[The mood] was good. We knew it was gonna be a tough series. When we win, we’re not too high and when we’re low, we’re not too low. We always try to stay even. Make adjustments, but the mentality, the character of the team doesn’t change.”
On the Game 3 defensive breakdowns:
“We didn’t make them miss. Last game they had—especially to start the game—easy catch-and-shoots, easy walk-in 3s. So we’ve gotta be more aggressive at the point of contact and we gotta force them into tougher shots. They’re good shooters. We knew they weren’t gonna shoot whatever they were shooting before. We knew they were gonna have a good shooting game at some point. The biggest thing is we let them start the game in such a rhythm. Especially with any NBA team in general, but when you have a team with that many shooters, when you let them get confident, it’s tough to stop.”
On needed Game 4 adjustments:
“We have to come out at the start of the game with a sense of urgency. That’s something that we didn’t do. We gotta give them credit – they’re the defending champions. We knew they weren’t just gonna lay down and let us win four in a row and go on our merry way. We knew that wasn’t gonna happen. Now it’s time to watch film, go through our adjustments and come out tomorrow with energy and physicality.”
On playing hurt:
“Yeah. It’s the playoff time. I can’t count on one hand the injuries that I’m dealing with. It’s playoff time. It’s the same for everybody. It’s the same for them, too. So we’ve gotta figure out how to go out there and execute.”
Karl-Anthony Towns was a full participant in Knicks practice today after injuring his finger yesterday in Game 3. He is expected to play in Game 4. Towns played through a thumb injury during the season & still found ways to impact wins w/o volume 3s. NYK needs whatever he has.

On the Game 3 loss:
“I mean, it’s disappointing to lose, in general. Doesn’t matter if it’s home or away. Obviously you want to win in front of your fans, but regardless, wherever we could get a win, we’ll take those W’s. We just didn’t do enough tonight to come out with a win.”
Jalen Brunson was asked what the Knicks’ mindset is heading into Game 4:
“Learn from Games 1-3, especially today. Just come out with some more urgency and be ready to go on Monday.” pic.twitter.com/X9mQLLbTMS

On the Game 3 blowout loss:
“I want to say this is our first loss that wasn’t a one-possession game. I don’t think it’s us not playing well here. This is obviously our home, the best place to play. Tonight, it just wasn’t there. Simple as that.”

“‘You suck…You need to do this’…I’m waiting for an owner, GM or coach to have enough guts to tell a player…they have to learn to shoot underhanded free throws'”

On Robinson’s free throw issues:
“It’s crazy. It’s so sad that guys are so bad and not proficient at the easiest part of the game—the only part of the game where nobody is trying to stop you from what you’re supposed to be doing. It makes no freaking sense.
“Free throws are a critical part of the game. It’s sad. He’s definitely a candidate to me [to shoot underhanded]. He’s got to make a switch. You can’t be shooting 30, 40 percent.”
“This is the fun part. You don’t get into the journey for it to be easy. It’s been dark, but in a good way.”

On avoiding turnovers being key in Game 3:
“We didn’t have [so many] live-ball turnovers. I can’t stress to you the importance of not throwing the ball to the other team and them getting out in transition.”
