Jason Kidd and the Dallas Mavericks have yet to agree to a contract extension, which leaves open the possibility of him still eventually becoming head coach of the New York Knicks. Kidd is believed to be the Knicks’ preferred candidate to replace Tom Thibodeau. Kidd is one of several current head coaches the Knicks reached out to and were denied permission. Beyond Kidd, the Knicks requested permission to speak with Ime Udoka, Billy Donovan, Chris Finch and Quin Snyder.
“Here’s where I’m going to start stating more facts,” said Brian Windhorst on Tuesday’s Rich Eisen Show. “Several of the coaches that they asked for permission on are in position to get contract extensions. Ime Udoka in Houston has gotten a contract extension. Billy Donovan has been reported and from what I’m told they’re going to try to get a contract extension done. When it was turned down, it was under the understanding he would get a contract extension done.
“Jason Kidd, who was their number one choice, has not had a contract extension done. And Jason Kidd’s lead assistant Sean Sweeney just left the Mavericks to work for the Spurs. Those are facts I just stated and I can move on from there.”
Kidd and the Mavericks agreed to a contract extension during the Mavericks’ run to the Finals in 2024. Sweeney has been an assistant coach under Kidd dating back to the Brooklyn Nets and Milwaukee Bucks.
