Will Knicks Fans Say Goodbye to LeBron?
LeBron will play in his 23rd season, and for the first time in recent years, he doesn’t have more years left on his contract. In the last several years, LeBron has always had a player option or something similar. This summer, he exercised his probably last player option. As the oldest player in the league, he is still among the 15 to 20 best players in the league. And that is remarkable.
LeBron loves playing at MSG. That was one of the reasons why New York Knicks fans hoped he will sign with the Knicks when he was a free agent, but he chose the Miami Heat. Nevertheless, anytime the King plays at MSG, it is a show.
LeBron’s Best Games at MSG
LeBron has done everything at the Garden. He has had high-scoring games (50+ points) and triple-doubles.
Last season, the Knicks and Lakers played in early February, same as this season. James put on a show, finishing with 33 points, 12 assists, and 11 rebounds, as the Lakers won 128-112. It was his 10th triple-double last season.
His best triple-double might be the one in 2010, when fans actually booed him. Knicks fans were mad that he chose Miami over New York. In his first game as a member of the Heat, he recorded a highly efficient triple-double, posting 32 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists, and a steal on 60.9% shooting from the floor.
James has also had high scoring games at the MSG. In 2008, he scored 50 points to go along with 10 assists and eight rebounds. Fans started chanting MVP as he was exiting the game. At the time, LeBron called the standing ovation “a dream come true.”
Then, in 2009, he posted another masterclass: 52 points, 11 assists, nine rebounds, and two blocks. What is iconic about that game is that it came two nights after Kobe Bryant set a then-MSG record with 61 points. While LeBron didn’t match Kobe’s scoring output, he became the second player, after Michael Jordan, to have multiple 50+ points games at MSG.
The question remains: will the February game be his last at Madison Square Garden? Fans surely cannot miss the Knicks vs. Lakers game.
