Yankees Pitching Prospect Campaigning for a 2026 MLB Opportunity

August 20, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

The New York Yankees have an extremely intriguing pitching prospect marinating in the minor leagues. Right-handed pitcher Carlos Lagrange is turning heads in his minor league showings. He may be the next biggest thing in the Yankees organization.

The current Yankees roster could use more depth in their major league rotation and the bullpen. The team had a few hiccups with arms this year.

Marcus Stroman’s services did not work out. Luis Gil’s year was delayed, and Gerrit Cole was sidelined due to a season-ending injury.

The postseason is still on the horizon for the Yankees in 2025. This will be a priority for the team, pertaining to roster structure and the pitching staff.

We’ll naturally look ahead to 2026 and wonder what that could look like, competition-wise.

Background: Carlos Lagrange

The Yankees brought Lagrange’s professional baseball dreams to life, signing him in the international signing period of February 2022. The right-hander committed for $10,000 and may have been the best Yankees pocket change spent.

Lagrange is originally from Bayaguana, Dominican Republic. After signing, he quickly joined the Yankees Dominican Summer League program (DOSL). The Dominican starting pitcher showed out well in his early development days.

His development and output on the mound are intriguing. Lagrange is very elite, with strong professional potential, and is currently ranked second in the Yankees farm system.

Statistics

Lagrange saw 33 innings to start his professional career in the DOSL. This set him up in a healthy manner to push forward into 2023 and 2024. In 2023, Lagrange recorded a 4.97 ERA with 63 strikeouts and 24 walks.

His transition from rookie ball to low-A was a struggle, but he grinded through. The total between the two levels showed a 6.68 ERA in 21 innings. This season was the rise of the future star. 2025 elevated the evaluations of Lagrange.

2025 was a collaboration of high-A and double-A. He currently has a 9-5 record, a 3.72 ERA in 96 and 2/3 innings. Lagrange has played in 19 games and has started 18 of them.

Lagrange filled up the “K” category, flooding with 138 total strikeouts and only 49 walks.

Scouting Analysis and Repertoire

The right-handed starter has a very physical presence, towering at 6’7” lbs 248 lbs with a gridiro type of athletic build. Strength is displayed on both halves of his body, with emphasis on his powerful lower half.

Lagrange’s wind and delivery is soft and fluent. His calming delivery is repeated well with what looks to be very little effort or exertion. His long limbs stride a massive step down the bump, and work an over-the-top and third-quarter release point.

He has a three-pitch mix, led by a live fastball, dirty slider, and well-worked changeup. Lagrange’s fastball has seen increases in velocity over the years. He currently sits between 97-99mph, working up to 102 mph.

His heater works on the flatter side with run, and heat. His obvious out-pitch is the slider. It carries a late sharp downward break, into left-handed batters, and away from righties. The slider works 83-85 mph.

Lagrange’s changeup has been in a refining stage. It works in the low 80s, and fades low and away, causing chase.

The prospect is thriving in his minor league campaign and is making noise for a quick promotion. His estimated time of arrival is going to be 2026. He could give the Yankees a good pitch as to why he should be considered for the rotation.
