Earlier this week, it was revealed that the New York Yankees have five Silver Slugger finalists: Gary Sanchez, Aaron Judge, Joey Gallo, Giancarlo Stanton, and DJ LeMahieu. We can argue about all of them being deserving candidates or not, but that’s the reality.
When it comes to the Gold Gloves, there is only one member of the Yankees nominated for the award. Joey Gallo, who spent the majority of the season with the Texas Rangers but played a solid left field for the Bombers, will have the opportunity to win the award, according to an announcement by MLB.
Sure, it’s only natural, since the Yankees weren’t a top defensive team in 2021 and had several underperformers, especially at catcher and shortstop. But Gallo will represent the team among the finalists.
The Yankees’ outfielder wants to repeat
Gallo was the winner of the award in right field last season, and will try to make it consecutive victories. He is being nominated for his work in right field, his position with the Rangers, but played mostly left field with the Yankees.
Kyle Tucker of the Houston Astros and Hunter Renfroe of the Boston Red Sox are the other finalists. Here is what the league’s official site had to say about the group:
“Last year’s AL Gold Glover in right field, Gallo is trying to make it two in a row, while Tucker and Renfroe are both seeking their first win. Renfroe tied Rangers rookie Adolis García for the MLB lead with 16 outfield assists, with Gallo (14 assists) close behind. Gallo and Tucker also produced 11 DRS apiece in right field, tied with Aaron Judge for second at the position behind García.”
Evidently, Gallo has the numbers to be seriously considered. Not only he produced 11 Defensive Runs Saved, but he also showcased his elite throwing arm. He also finished in the 94th percentile in Outs Above Average (OAA) and in the 90th percentile in Outfield Jump.
