Yankees Minor Leaguer Performing in Grand Style in 2025

May 21, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

The noise around the recent Subway Series has consumed baseball fans all week. The return of Juan Soto to last year’s stomping grounds created plenty of buzz around the New York Yankees and New York Mets. But a lesser-known product, Jose Rojas, has been making his own noise within the Yankees organization.

Rojas had his photo and statistics plastered on the Jumbotron at Yankee Stadium between innings this weekend, and for good reason. The minor league veteran is currently playing for the Yankees Triple-A affiliate, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders.

What’s the hype with Rojas? He’s been a powerhouse this season, particularly on three swings. With just three hacks at the dish, Rojas is responsible for 12 runs on his own. On May 17th, Rojas belted his third grand slam this year.

Yes, he has three grand slams alone in one season. This makes him the first RailRiders player in franchise history to do so. Not to mention, all three of these grand slams have come in the month of May. Rojas hit his first one this season on May 1st in Syracuse, and the other on May 7th against Rochester.

More About Yankees Minor League Infielder Jose Rojas

Jose Rojas is playing Triple-A baseball, but by no means is a true minor leaguer. He has two major league seasons under his belt, along with four seasons in foreign leagues as a professional player, and eight minor league seasons.

The slugger is from Anaheim, California; he attended Vanguard University of South California. Rojas was drafted in the 2016 draft in the 36th round by the Los Angeles Angels. His two major league seasons were with the Angels.

Rojas was picked up by the Yankees on March 18th, 2025, signing a minor league contract. He was assigned to the RailRiders in Triple-A. The 32-year-old Rojas is 5’10”, 200 lbs, hitting from the left side and throwing right-handed. Rojas is a primary third baseman.

His Season So Far in Triple-A

Rojas is shining bright with a decently productive season so far. The third baseman is hitting for a .258 batting average with a .342 on-base percentage and a .530 slugging percentage. He’s recorded 34 hits, eight home runs, and 35 RBI.

He’s scored 17 times, walked 17 times, and struck out 31 times. Rojas has been consistent at the plate and providing quality at-bats. His contributions are valuable, and now are being recognized.

Rojas has a .872 OPS and 70 total bases. The third baseman has also spent time with the San Francisco Giants organization and the Pittsburgh Pirates. Defensively, Rojas has covered several different positions.

His primary position was at third base where he has spent 102 innings in 2025. He recorded an .826 fielding percentage at the hot corner. Rojas has also spent a substantial amount of time in left and right field, recording a 1.000 fielding percentage in between 44 to 80 innings.

Grand Slams of All Time

No minor league player has come close to the accomplishment of hitting three grand slams in one year, let alone in the same month. Only two players have reached more than one in a year.

Current New York Mets star Brandon Nimmo hit two grand slams in his 2012 season with the Brooklyn Cyclones. This led the New York-Penn League in that category. Ryan Cordell hit two grand slams with the Double-A Frisco RoughRiders in 2016.

These two grand slams were within the first 13 games of the 2016 season.
