The New York Yankees finished business in the Bronx, defeating the Boston Red Sox in the American League Wild Card Series. In the crucial three-game set, the Yankees had help from contributors to lead them to victory.
The Red Sox provided some anxiety for the Yankees in this year’s renewed rivalry series. Both teams got some elite performances, making the best-of-three showdown competitive to the finish.
What Yankees players did in these three games was crucial, especially heading up to Toronto. Some important mentions include Amed Rosario, who sparked the offense in game three. Rosario started the offensive train with an RBI single, contributing to a four-run inning. This rally ended up being what they needed to get them over the hump. The Yankees’ new closer, David Bednar, did his job in Game Three, throwing a quick inning to close out the series.
Anthony Volpe was active with his bat, along with Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge. This was a full team effort, but there were three names specifically that were x-factors.
Three Yankees X-Factors Were Big Contributors in the Wild Card Series
Cam Schlittler
X-factor one, without question, has to be the Yankees’ Game Three starter, Cam Schlittler. The right-handed rookie was slotted in prior to the series, getting the nod over Will Warren and Luis Gil.
Yankees management surely made the right choice here. Let’s start with the fact that the Red Sox were completely shut out in game three, where more offensive fight was expected. Schlittler was dominant and healthy in this outing.

Facing the pressure of game three and the judgmental and mind-shaking Yankee Stadium crowd, Schlittler was unfazed, composed, and was a rock star on the bump. The right-hander went eight strong innings, allowing no runs on only five hits, striking out 12 Red Sox hitters.
He threw 107 pitches with 75 strikes. Schlittler threw 21 called strikes, 18 swinging strikes, 19 foul balls, and 15 in-play strikes. He also induced four ground balls and eight fly balls. Schlittler carried the Yankees on Thursday night with a stellar performance in a must-win game.
Carlos Rodón
Rodón was another X-factor for the Yankees in this series. The left-handed pitcher was expected to succeed due to his strong regular-season performance. However, there was also the fear of struggle due to his track record of postseason inconsistency.
Although Rodón did not get credited with a win, he did give the Yankees a strong outing to avoid elimination in Game Two. Rodon pitched six innings allowing three runs on four hits, striking out six hitters.
His work set up the bullpen to finish the game, grabbing a 4-3 win. This performance was huge for Rodón going into the series against Toronto.
Ben Rice
The other series X-factor was first baseman Ben Rice. Rice was not overly exaggerating, but his swing was effective, and his bat presence was good in this series.
After sitting in Game One with lefty Garret Crochet on the mound for Boston, Rice came in clutch in the right moments when things mattered most. In two Wild Card games, Rice recorded seven at-bats, recording two hits, one home run, two RBI, and scored twice.
His work at the plate built some confidence in postseason baseball and will be much needed up in Canada against the Blue Jays.
