Report: Yankees Closer Luke Weaver Out 4-6 Weeks with Hamstring Injury

June 3, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

The New York Yankees have taken a massive hit to their bullpen, as closer Luke Weaver could miss four to six weeks with a hamstring injury, sources tell ESPN’s Jeff Passan. Weaver hurt himself while warming up before Sunday night’s series finale against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He pitched the night before during an 18-2 blowout win by the Dodgers, as he hadn’t been in a game for a few days. While no official announcement has been made, the expectation is that he will go on the injured list. A clearer timetable for Weaver’s return will likely emerge by Tuesday.

Report: Luke Weaver Could Miss Several Weeks After Hamstring Injury

The 31-year-old right-hander has been excellent in 24 appearances this season. Across 25 2/3 innings, he has a 1-1 record with a 1.05 ERA, a 0.701 WHIP, 24 strikeouts to seven walks, and eight saves.

This news throws the Yankees’ closer situation into question. Weaver recently retook the position from the newly acquired Devin Williams, who struggled mightily to begin the season. Weaver picked up where he left off last season, thriving in the 9th inning and preserving Yankees wins. Williams, for his part, has adjusted nicely to pitching in the eighth inning instead. In recent weeks, manager Aaron Boone said he liked the bullpen structure as constituted, but that Williams could slip back into the closer role eventually. That time may now be coming sooner rather than later. If that’s the case, it would make for an interesting situation upon Weaver’s return if Williams gets into a groove.

Other high-leverage relievers, such as Tim Hill, Ian Hamilton, Mark Leiter Jr., and Jonathan Loáisiga, who just returned from injury, could see their workloads increase and/or their roles shift. Aside from Williams’ early hiccups, the Yankees bullpen has been largely solid this season, and is one factor behind their sizable lead in the American League East.
