Report: Yankees Acquire Camilo Doval from SF Giants

August 1, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

The New York Yankees are making a splash this trade deadline, trading for their third relief pitcher, Camilo Doval, within the span of just a few hours. Jack Curry of the YES Network was the first to report the deal, which occurred just minutes before the 6 pm EST deadline. In return for Doval, New York is sending four prospects to San Francisco.

Report: SF Giants Trade Camilo Doval to Yankees

That’s it for the Yankees today. They added Bednar, Bird and Doval to transform their bullpen. And they added Caballero to give them infield depth, flexibility and speed. They were hunting for a starting pitcher. But did not end up adding one.

Newest Addition

Doval, 28, joins David Bednar and Jake Bird as the newest additions to a much more formidable Yankee bullpen. The right-hander is enjoying another great season after an unusually rough 2024. He has a 3.09 ERA and 50 strikeouts over 46 2/3 innings, with 24 walks as the only concerning statistic. He is primarily a ground-ball pitcher, boasting a 52.2% ground ball rate. Additionally, opponents are only hitting .175 and .220 off his slider and cutter (his two most-thrown pitches), respectively.

Flipping the Script

The Yankees needed to make big moves if they want to contend with the Toronto Blue Jays, who will only improve now that they’ve acquired Shane Bieber from the Cleveland Guardians. With Doval, Bednar, and Bird heading to the Bronx, the Yankees have fulfilled their biggest need as July winds down. Because a good chunk of their bullpen is depleted, New York is now much more prepared to win back first place in the AL East and, subsequently, make a deep run in the postseason.

Two of the prospects heading to the Giants, Trystan Vrieling and Carlos De La Rosa, are pitchers currently in Rookie ball. The other two, Jesus Rodriguez and Parks Harber, are position players in Double-A and Single-A, respectively.
