New York Yankees right-hander Luis Gil will undergo an MRI after experiencing shoulder tightness during a bullpen session on Friday. Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters that the MRI is scheduled for Saturday and feels like the injury could “cost us some time.”

Yankees Starter Luis Gil Pulled from Bullpen with Shoulder Injury
The reigning American League Rookie of the Year, Gil was a late addition to the Yankees starting rotation following Gerrit Cole‘s elbow injury last March. Gil made 29 starts, recording a 3.50 ERA over 151 ⅔ innings in his first full major league season. The 26-year-old was expected to return to a star-studded Yankees rotation featuring Cole, Max Fried, Carlos Rodón, and Clarke Schmidt. Gil was building toward his first start of spring training when he started feeling tightness in his throwing arm.
“When a pitcher stops his bullpen, that’s concerning,” Boone told reporters before Friday night’s game against the Blue Jays. “I don’t want to get ahead of myself. Any time they pull themselves from a bullpen, a couple of pitches in, that’s concerning.”
Boone said it was not an elbow injury, though he said the tightness was not definitively from his shoulder either. He told reporters that the discomfort Gil felt was “somewhere higher up,” and gestured toward his upper biceps. An MRI is scheduled for Saturday, with the Yankees expecting to have a clearer understanding of the injury by Monday. Shoulder injuries are generally more problematic for pitchers than elbow injuries, though Gil has a history of elbow troubles, undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2022.
While Gil has not been ruled out for Opening Day, he will likely be unavailable to start the regular season. Should he miss time, Marcus Stroman and Will Warren would be candidates to take his place in the starting rotation. New York also has veteran right-hander Carlos Carrasco, in camp on a minor league deal, who could also see time.
