Mets Linked to Edward Cabrera in Trade Talks

Mets Linked to Marlins’ Right-Hander Edward Cabrera

The Major League Baseball offseason is finally starting to heat up after a silent stretch over the holidays. A new name has entered the conversation, one that hasn’t surfaced since July’s trade deadline: Miami Marlins starting pitcher Edward Cabrera. According to Barry Jackson, the New York Yankees have joined the New York Mets and Chicago Cubs in showing interest in the former top prospect.

The Mets first connected to Cabrera at the trade deadline, emerging as one of several teams with interest, but talks never progressed, and Miami kept him. Now 27, Cabrera represents a legitimate acquisition target for any interested club, as he comes with three years of team control and a $3.7 million salary in 2026.

Cabrera is an intriguing “boom-or-bust” option, showcasing a deep pitch arsenal that features a high-velocity fastball and a filthy changeup. He delivered a career year in 2025, posting a 3.53 ERA while setting a personal best with 150 strikeouts across 137.2 innings.

At this stage, the Yankees have advanced furthest in discussions with the Marlins. However, the Mets remain among the few teams still involved, especially after the Houston Astros landed Tatsuya Imai and the Baltimore Orioles acquired Shane Baz to fill their rotation needs.

The Mets have also surfaced in rumors involving Milwaukee Brewers starter Freddy Peralta and Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal, two pitchers who stand out as the premier arms potentially available on the trade market. With six weeks remaining before spring training, David Stearns still has time to improve the rotation, a task he would likely prefer to accomplish by acquiring a younger, controllable arm.
