How the Yankees’ Newly Acquired Utilityman Fits into a Crowded Infield

July 31, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

Brian Cashman and the New York Yankees will take all the assistance they can get to end their latest slide. The club recently acquired infielder Amed Rosario prior to Thursday’s trade deadline.

In that deal, they parted ways with outfielder Browm Martinez, who signed a free agent contract with the team in January 2024. Martinez was assigned to the DSL-NYY Bombers. To obtain Rosario,  they also shipped out a top prospect arm. Right-handed pitcher Clayton Beeter was also traded to the Nationals alongside Martinez. Beeter was ranked the Yankees’ number 20 prospect in the team’s top 30. Beeter was a key part of the farm system and held optimal trade value.

The Yankees now have Ryan McMahon playing third base, which is why he was brought to the Bronx. Anthony Volpe and Jazz Chisholm Jr. hold down the middle infield at second base and shortstop. So, what does Rosario bring to the table, and where does he fit in?

Amed Rosario: Player Profile and Statistics

The utility infielder Rosario broke into the major leagues in 2017 with the New York Mets. He has nine years of big league experience with several teams, including the Cleveland Guardians, Los Angeles Dodgers, Tampa Bay Rays, Cincinnati Reds, and the Nationals.

When looking at Rosario’s statistics, he has 46 games played this season, with 148 at-bats, recording 40 hits, five home runs, 18 RBI, scoring 19 times, and slashing .270/.310/.426.

Rosario’s 2024 season was split among three teams. The infielder finished last season with 93 hits, 32 RBI, 21 extra-base hits, 13 stolen bases, and 29 runs scored. He played in 103 games that season.

Rosario’s best season offensively would be 2019 with the Mets. He showed his full capabilities, with his bat hot and his base-running also on display. The infielder finished with 177 hits, 15 home runs, 72 RBI, 19 stolen bases, and a slash line of .287/.323/.432.

Metrics and Synopsis

Rosario stands 6’2”, 190 lbs, with athleticism and power. He does it all from the right side and works his bat with versatility. Rosario’s spray chart for 2025 is diverse, as he used most of the field for singles and extra-base hits. His home runs are primarily to the pull side.

He has an average exit velocity of 91.2 mph with a max exit velocity of 110.9 mph. He has a 34.6% sweet-spot percentage, 44.9% hard-hit percentage, and a 13.9% strikeout percentage.

His pull-side is 42.5% with a 35.4% straight-away placement, and a 22% opposite field placement. He has an AIR of 18.9%, the highest of his career.

The new Yankees infielder has played four primary defensive positions this season–third base, shortstop, second base, and outfield (all inclusive). Rosario finished with a 1.000 fielding percentage in the outfield, .966 at second base, and .911 at third base.

Where Does Rosario Fit in the Bronx Defense?

Rosario will be coming off the bench and inserted in scenarios as needed. The primary infielder can slot in anywhere in the outfield and almost anywhere on the infield. He can also occupy the designated hitter spot.

Rosario also flashes some speed and athleticism on the base paths, and can pinch run with intent to take 90s. He has 110 stolen bases, getting caught only 36 times in his entire career. Rosario will be a huge piece of the depth off the bench.
