As August winds down, it’s almost time for MLB teams to expand their rosters with young, untamed talent for the month of September. For the New York Yankees, there are quite a few prospects in their system who could have a legitimate impact on the team as they vie for a spot in the postseason. Their young players won’t see too much time on the field, but that doesn’t mean they can’t alter the course of New York’s season. Here are five Yankee prospects who have the best chance to A) make the MLB roster in September, and B) succeed at the major league level.
Five Yankees Prospects Who Could Be Promoted This September
Spencer Jones
Spencer Jones, who lit up headlines last month after hitting 13 homers in his first 19 games after his promotion to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, has been receiving much more hype this season after scouts started to doubt his ability to cut down on strikeouts while maintaining his light-tower power. Through 38 games thus far with the RailRiders, Jones is slashing an impressive .296/.371/.618 with 14 homers, 33 RBI, and 40 runs. He may not be totally ready for the show just yet, but there’s no doubt that he’s going to make headlines when he is.

Brendan Beck
Though Brendan Beck has struggled at times in Triple-A this season, there’s good reason to believe that he can be a solid addition to New York’s pitching staff in the near future. After waiting to make his pro debut until 2023 thanks to Tommy John surgery, Beck has developed control and command that are major league-ready; the right-hander has certainly put it on display with an 11-3 record and a 3.21 ERA with both Double-A Somerset and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. If he ends August on a strong note, he could very well end up coming out of the bullpen for the Yankees come next month.
Brendan Beck has a 4.76 ERA and 36 strikeouts in 44 1/3 innings in his first experience in AAA this season. Him and his brother Tristan, a reliever with the Giants, are eligible to play for Great Britain at the WBC through their grandfather, who is from Wales pic.twitter.com/rlnjNXOzvk

Carlos Lagrange
Silently climbing up the ranks of New York’s farm system this season has been Carlos Lagrange, who has been dominant starting for the Somerset Patriots. Though he just joined Somerset this year, scouts believe that he could join the big league squad as early as next season, so there’s a shot that they try him out at the highest level this season, too. Over 11 starts in Double-A, the right-hander has tossed 100 1/3 innings to a 3.84 ERA with 78 strikeouts and a concerning 40 walks. If he’s able to improve on his command, there’s a legitimate shot that he could make a splash in the Bronx.

Brock Selvidge
Also a quick riser through New York’s organization, left-handed pitcher Brock Selvidge started the year in Rookie ball and is now starting for Double-A Somerset. Although he also struggles with walks, issuing 36 in 55 2/3 innings, this could be partially attributed to a bicep injury, being that scouts have raved about his control and athleticism both before and after the injury. As a left-handed pitcher, there’s a good chance that the Yankees could call him up to the bigs as a situational reliever for their playoff push.

T.J. Rumfield
T.J. Rumfield has been one of the Yankees’ best-hitting prospects for a couple of years now, and he has only solidified himself as perhaps the best hitter on the Railriders. Slashing .305/.392/.495 with 15 homers, 82 RBI, and 55 walks, Rumfield has simply never gotten the chance to show his skills at the major league level, with first base being completely occupied by both Paul Goldschmidt and Ben Rice this season. If the Yankees need a solid bat to use off their bench in case of injuries, Rumfield would be the perfect internal option.
