The New York Yankees today announced that right-handed pitcher Carlos Lagrange is the recipient of the 2026 James P. Dawson Award, given annually to the most outstanding Yankees rookie in spring training.
Lagrange, 22, has gone 1-0 with a 0.66 ERA (13.2IP, 6H, 2R/1ER, 4BB, 13K, 1HR) in four spring appearances (one start). The right-handed pitcher went 11-8 with a 3.53 ERA (120.0IP, 82H, 51R/47ER, 62BB, 168K, 8HR) in 24 combined games (23 starts) with High-A Hudson Valley and Double-A Somerset in 2025. Among Yankees farmhands last season, he ranked first in opponents’ BA (.191), second in strikeouts, was tied for fourth in winning percentage (.579), tied for fifth in starts and WHIP (1.20), sixth in innings pitched and eighth in ERA. The Bayaguana, D.R., native was signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent on February 3, 2022.
The award was established in honor of James P. Dawson (1896-1953), who began a 45-year career with The New York Times as a copy boy in 1908. Eight years later, he became boxing editor and covered boxing and baseball until his death during spring training in 1953.
Two winners of the honor, Tony Kubek in 1957 and Tom Tresh in 1962, went on to win the American League “Rookie of the Year” Award. The Dawson Award first was presented to rookie Norm Siebern by Manager Casey Stengel in St. Petersburg, Fla., at the conclusion of spring training in 1956. New York Yankees beat writers vote on the winner.
