What to Expect From Ronny Mauricio in 2026

February 25, 2026 by Last Word On Baseball

Ronny Mauricio, the former Mets top prospect, has yet to make a lasting impact on the major league roster. After his official debut in 2023, Mauricio was expected to take a leap into an everyday role in 2024. That changed when he tore his ACL and missed the entire season.

Mauricio saw limited playing time in 2025. He hit six home runs with 10 RBIs while batting .226 in 168 at-bats. Rumors swirled all offseason involving the former top prospect, who received interest from several teams. However, it was Luisangel Acuña who was moved in a trade involving Luis Robert Jr.

Now, Mauricio remains with the Mets. He holds a role that could be pivotal to their success.

What to expect

The potential is there. Mauricio has an immense ability to put the bat on the ball. He recorded the longest home run of the season last year for New York. Now, he must find the consistency to produce at the major league level.

“Last year, when I wasn’t playing, I was able to step back and see things I needed to improve in my game if I want to be on the field and be able to help the team,” Mauricio said.

Mauricio is expected to be fully healthy entering the 2026 season, according to manager Carlos Mendoza. That means the production could follow. Francisco Lindor is currently rehabbing from right hamate bone surgery. The procedure has put his availability for Opening Day in question. Mauricio is a versatile player. He can play anywhere in the infield given his range. He is likely the No. 1 candidate to take over at shortstop if Lindor misses time.

If Lindor is healthy to begin the regular season, Mauricio should start the year in the minors. That would allow him to see consistent playing time and continue developing. The Mets focused on balance in their infield this offseason. They added Bo Bichette, Marcus Semien, and Jorge Polanco. Those additions limit Mauricio’s immediate role. If one of them goes down for an extended period, Mauricio could step in.

Through three spring training games, Mauricio has appeared twice at shortstop and once at third base. He is 2-for-7 with a home run in a tie against the Astros.

“The last two years, I haven’t been able to have a real spring training because of the injury,” Mauricio said. “I want to show I can play wherever the team needs me — second, third or short.”
