While the Mets’ recent stretch of playing miserable baseball might not be the most inspiring thing to have happened this season, Major League Baseball has opened up its second round of voting for the All-Star Game. During this brief round of voting, fans vote for finalists to determine which players start at their respective positions.
Juan Soto, Pete Alonso, and Francisco Lindor are the Mets’ finalists for this phase of voting, and despite the team’s recent struggles, all three will almost certainly make the team. Here’s how they compare to their competition in this round of voting, though, should you want to cast some votes in an effort to have them be starters.
First Base, National League
- Pete Alonso: .291/.380/.541, 18 HR, 47 R, 65 RBI, 159 wRC+, 2.6 fWAR
- Freddie Freeman: .312/.386/.509, 10 HR, 44 R, 43 RBI, 147 wRC+, 2.2 fWAR
Alonso has clearly been the better of the two options at first base, and hey, even if that weren’t objectively the case, enough with Freddie Freeman already, right? A vote for Pete Alonso is defensible on all fronts.
Shortstop, National League
- Francisco Lindor: .258/.327/.447, 16 HR, 51 R, 43 RBI, 13 SB, 118 wRC+, 3.0 fWAR
- Mookie Betts: .249/.327/.380, 9 HR, 51 R, 41 RBI, 6 SB, 99 wRC+, 1.8 fWAR
Once again, the Met who’s up against a Dodger is clearly the superior player thus far this season. Despite his recent struggles, Lindor is absolutely deserving of a starting spot in the All-Star Game.
Outfield, National League
- Juan Soto: .258/.394/.507, 20 HR, 61 R, 47 RBI, 9 SB, 153 wRC+, 2.3 fWAR
- Ronald Acuña Jr.: .361/.479/.630, 9 HR, 32 R, 18 RBI, 4 SB, 206 wRC+, 2.1 fWAR
- Pete Crow-Armstrong: .262/.299/.537, 21 HR, 59 R, 62 RBI, 25 SB, 129 wRC+, 3.9 fWAR
- Teoscar Hernández: .259/.294/.481, 14 HR, 40 R, 53 RBI, 5 SB, 113 wRC+, 0.6 fWAR
- Andy Pages: .291/.328/.500, 16 HR, 42 R, 55 RBI, 6 SB, 129 wRC+, 2.9 fWAR
- Kyle Tucker: .291/.395/.537, 17 HR, 61 R, 52 RBI, 20 SB, 157 wRC+, 4.0 fWAR
Things aren’t quite as clear cut in the outfield, where you could make the argument that three of the other outfielders in this group have been better than Juan Soto so far this year. But if you prioritize hitting, Soto has been the second-best of this group among players who have been on the field all season. Throw in Ronald Acuña’s outrageously good numbers at the plate since returning from the IL, and Soto’s still the third-best hitter in this group by wRC+. And if you’re still not sure if you want to click to vote for him, maybe you can do it just to troll some of the Yankees fans in your life.
And again, you can vote once per day from today, June 30, until 12:00 PM EDT on Wednesday, July 2.
