Lots of interesting, funny, idiotic, and insightful things were said by the Mets—and about them—recently. Here are some of our favorites.
The Mets’ “Not Panicking or being anxious” T-shirt has people asking a lot of questions already answered by their shirt.
“I don’t think there’s any panic or rush or anxiousness at all. We’re still not even halfway over with the season. We still have so much baseball left. … There’s going to be times when we’re scorching hot, and there’s going to be times where it’s not going to be like that.” -Pete Alonso [MLB]
“I think it’s something that’s going to click. The guys are going to connect at-bats. We have Conforto’s presence. We have McNeil’s presence in the lineup. Those guys are going to start hitting, and they’re going to start connecting with Lindor and Alonso, who are swinging better right now. It’s something that I expect to happen, because we’ve seen it happen in the past.” -Luis Rojas [MLB]
The weekly reminder the Mets are in first place is getting more ominous sounding.
“[The Mets lack of offense is] never concerning when you’re in first place. We’re finding ways to get the job done. Obviously, we’re not going to win every game. If we did, we would be 162-0, which is impossible, so it’s part of the game.” -Dom Smith [New York Post]
Love playing in a ‘tough division’ where only two teams are barely over .500.
“It’s a tough division. We’ve said it always since the offseason, since Spring Training, and now during the season. We said it’s a tough division. I think everyone in the division has dealt with a lot of injuries. Significant pieces of every team in this division have been out for a period of time, but that just keeps the division balanced. It’s still tough. We’ve all got to find a way to keep our teams moving forward.” -Luis Rojas [MLB]
“Everybody in the NL East right now is close. It’s nice for us to be in first so we have everyone chasing us. They’re good ballclubs. We just need to keep playing well, keep winning ballgames, and hopefully at the end of the year, we’re at the top.” -Jeff McNeil [MLB]
After a tough week, You Gotta Believe.
“I just feel like it’s a theme for our team: we never feel that we’re out of a game. We believe in each other whether we have 1-2-3 coming up in the lineup or we have 7-8-9 coming up in the lineup. We believe in each other and believe that somebody is going to get the job done.” -James McCann [New York Post]
It’s going to be weird when the Braves don’t have a likable heel on their team.
“Getting three runs off Jake is very hard to do. Doing it off him in just one inning is obviously even harder.” -Freddie Freeman [MLB]
Mets playoff odds dropped roughly 10% during the Braves series.
“It’s amazing what you do when you put the ball in play.I was trying to do that all game. It was just a great inning after they scored a run in the top of the ninth. That was just a huge win for us.” -Freddie Freeman [MLB]
Always interesting to get a look into when players know a record is occurring during play.
“[Players] knew there was a string of strikeouts and they knew how good [Nola] was, because they kept talking about how his stuff was going strike to ball and it was just disappearing. He was able to paint as well. … Everyone was aware after six straight. They started paying more attention and then he struck out the side again next inning.” -Luis Rojas [New York Post]
deGrom was doing a helluva job convincing me otherwise.
“Jake is human so these things are going to happen.” -Luis Rojas [New York Post]
Wish deGrom could say the same about Mets fans to the Mets offense.
“I love pitching here. Mets fans have been great to me.” -Jacob deGrom [New York Post]
Bobby Valentine on deGrom.
“[deGrom] has that same competitiveness that Seaver and Gibson and Ryan had. Seaver’s fastball away and Jacob’s fastball away are really, really similar, and their sliders are pretty similar, but Jacob’s is just a little more consistent and a little faster, and his changeup is a little better. And then you add in the fact that deGrom is like Gibson as a fielder. He doesn’t have the power of Gibson as a hitter, but he’s as good a base runner as Gibson was. I don’t want to be blasphemous. I wouldn’t want to put Tom Seaver at No. 2 in anything, and all those guys are geniuses. But I just want to reiterate that every time I watch deGrom, I’m struck by the same thought: ‘He’s just a little better.’ ” -Bobby Valentine [New York Post]
Silver lining in the Mets 20-2 loss.
“I was super excited. I’ve been working for this a long time. Obviously not what I was looking for [in terms of results] but I was super happy I was able to give the team the innings they needed and now our bullpen is fresh.” -Thomas Szapucki [New York Post]

SiteBot FacePalm of the Week / AA Quote of the Week
“If anyone has access to Pete Alonso on here, please tell him to stop taking the game winning hitter’s jersey off. It is getting old, and unauthentic at this point. It was cool when it happened organically to Conforto last year, but every time it loses more luster, and now seems dumb.” –cschulznym
“I mean if they want to celebrate that way, let them celebrate that way. Just be happy they won. Not everything needs to be logged in the complaint file.” –NothingButMet
