The Mets may be looking to make bullpen moves in free agency

December 15, 2022 by Empire Sports Media

Earlier today, New York Mets general manager Billy Eppler met with the media.

Eppler discussed the Mets offseason up until this point with the acquisitions made and where the team could still look to add.

The bullpen of the Mets was the biggest issue throughout 2022. Eppler has done his best to change that up until this point. Right off the bat of free agency, he re-signed Edwin Diaz to a blockbuster deal. Two great additions were made with the signing of David Robertson and the trade for Brooks Raley. Even beyond these three, the Mets have continued to throw resources toward the position group.

Whether it be the trade for Elieser Hernandez and Jeff Brigham, the claim made for Stephen Ridings, or the signings of Denyi Reyes and Jimmy Yacabonis, the Mets have invested a ton into their bullpen but still need more.

Mets GM Billy Eppler comments on more relief pitching:

During the media session, Eppler was asked about whether or not more additions need to be made to the bullpen and said the following.

“There’s still some interesting, talented players out there in the marketplace. I’ll stay engaged there. Some of the moves that we’ve been able to make and even some preemptive ones, whether it was the John Curtiss signing last year or the trade with the Marlins that brought over (Jeff) Brigham and Elieser (Hernandez).

Exciting to hear from the Mets’ general manager.

Eppler spoke on the fact that there is talent still on the market. Some of the best remaining free-agent relief pitchers are Andrew Chafin, Adam Ottavino, Taylor Rogers, Brad Hand, Craig Kimbrel, Seth Lugo, Mike Fulmer, and Aroldis Chapman. Certainly, a multitude of options for Eppler and Steve Cohen to make their pick.

To add one of the highlighted names above with Diaz, Robertson, and Raley provides the Mets with a strongly improved unit on paper going into next season.
