Tennis: What’s Next?

After an entertaining Australian Open, we take a look at what’s next in the Tennis 2021 calendar.

 With the Australian Open complete, tennis fans may be wondering when they will be able to watch some more spectacular tennis.

Novak Djokovic clinched his 18th Grand Slam victory this year in an unusual Australian Open with quarantine protocols and limited spectators in attendance. Meanwhile, Naomi Osaka was crowned women’s singles champion for 2021.

There’s much more to look forward to when it comes to upcoming tennis, and we’re here to tell you what you should be getting excited about.

The Grand Slams

For those who aren’t sure, the tennis calendar is based around the four Grand Slams that stretch out over the 12-month period.

In a calendar year, Australian Open is always first – which has already taken place – followed by the Roland Garros French Open in May. Rafael Nadal is the reigning men’s singles champion, who won the 2020 French Open in a delayed competition that unusually took place in October.

You don’t have to wait long after that until the next major competition, with Wimbledon taking place just a month later in June. The prestigious tournament is hosted by England every year, and will always provide some high-quality tennis and entertainment.

Rounding off the Grand Slams is the US Open, taking place in late August. In 2020, there were limited participants in the US Open because of the travel restrictions across the world, but that’s not to take anything away from Naomi Osaka and Dominic Thiem, who were crowned women’s and men’s singles champions.

But, just because the major tournaments are all finished, it doesn’t mean you have to wait until January to watch some more live action.

What Other Tournaments Will There Be?

That’s right, there’s so much more to look out for in the tennis calendar, as well as the major competitions.

Unfortunately, with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, some competitions are having to postpone/cancel for the second time now, but thankfully it’s not the end of tennis.

There are many ATP competitions, located in multiple areas across the world and happen every year. The most well-known ones include the Miami Open, which is one of the next tournaments to take place at the end of March.

On top of that, you may want to look out for the run-up to the US Open, with the National Bank Open in Canada and the Western & Southern Open in America.

If that wasn’t already enough to look forward to, there are also three Masters series over the year, sponsored by Rolex, with the first located in Monte Carlo in April. This tournament finishes on April 18, just over a month before the French Open commences.

Later in the year, the Shanghai Masters and Paris Masters are part of the end of the calendar year, taking place in October and November, meaning there’s some tennis action all year round for you to tune into.

2021 Tokyo Olympics

What should have taken part in the summer of 2020, but delayed due to the worldwide pandemic, the Tokyo Olympics is now scheduled to take place in July 2021 (pandemic permitting).

Tennis is one of the major sports competed by countries across the world in the Olympic Games, and we’re certain that Tokyo will be no different.

Tennis stars across the world will travel to Japan to take part in the biggest sporting event in the world, with Andy Murray and Monica Puig defending their Olympic gold medals for the men’s and women’s singles respectively.

Which Tennis Stars Will Dominate the Year?

Who will conquer the 2021 tennis calendar? Only time will tell, but it has been a good start from the men’s world number 1 Novak Djokovic – he’ll definitely want to build on his impressive Australian Open display.

In the women’s singles, Serena Williams will be looking to seek revenge and attempt to get back on top after an Australian Open semi-final loss against champion Osaka. The Japanese tennis star will hope to continue her recent tennis form, winning two of the last three Grand Slams.
