After starting at first base in all 99 games for the Mets so far this season, Pete Alonso is out of the lineup on Sunday against the Reds with a right-hand contusion. According to manager Carlos Mendoza, Alonso is day-to-day. felt discomfort early in Saturday’s game, and got X-rays following the game which were negative.
Alonso has started in 205 consecutive games for the Mets, and has played in a franchise-record 353 consecutive games. While Alonso may be available to pinch-hit on Sunday, the streak is nonetheless in jeopardy.
The Polar Bear is putting together a phenomenal season after re-signing with the Mets in February. Alonso is on pace to finish the season with 43 doubles, 34 homers, and 126 RBI, and nearly added an All-Star Game MVP to his 2025 resume after clubbing a three-run homer in the midsummer classic last week. Alonso also sits just five homers away from tying Darryl Strawberry’s franchise home run record of 252.
Mark Vientos will be starting at first base in Pete’s place as the Mets look to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday. With Alonso potentially down for a handful of games, the Mets’ crop of young infielders is poised to receive more playing time as the trade deadline looms eleven days away.
