With Pitchers and Catchers reporting in less than 15 days, baseball season is right around the corner. The New York Mets have already made big changes to their team this offseason, adding Freddy Peralta, Bo Bichette, and Luis Robert Jr., among others. With all the acquisitions made, there is one spot in the Mets lineup with a question mark, and that is the DH. However, we finally have an answer! It seems the Mets will platoon between Mark Vientos and Brett Baty.
Mets Plan to Platoon Between Baty and Vientos at DH
According to Will Sammon and Tim Britton of The Athletic, the Mets will rotate players in and out of the DH spot, with Vientos and Baty being the main two guys. Baty and Vientos are two guys who have at times shown promise and at times have also been disappointing. It will be interesting to see whether they show they belong this season.
Baty Will Look To Improve Upon a Solid 2025 Campaign
Baty had himself a very solid 2025 with the Mets. He had career highs in homers, batting average, and RBIs, while also showing an improvement with his glove at third. Offensively, he hit 18 dingers, 50 RBIs, with a slash line of .254/.313/.435. Going into his age-26 season, Baty will look to improve even further on his stellar 2025.
Vientos Will Look To Bounce Back
Vientos had a magical 2024 run with the Mets in their run to the NLCS. However, 2025 was a down and frustrating year for him. Vientos finished the year with a slash line of .233/.289/.413 with 17 home runs and 61 RBIs. The Mets will need a big bounce-back year from him to prove that his 2024 run was not a fluke.
Will Platooning Baty and Vientos Be the Answer?
This will be a real make-or-break year for the two homegrown players. It will be intriguing to see if this will be a successful move by the Mets or a failure. There will be a lot of trust put into both players this year, and it will be interesting to see if they can capitalize on it.
