Mets: Steve Cohen believes the team needs another bat

December 15, 2022 by Empire Sports Media

After this thrilling start to the offseason, one of the final few needs for the New York Mets is their offense.

The Mets lineup played a significant part in the collapse down the stretch of 2022. Aside from re-signing Brandon Nimmo, a move they had to make, and picking up Daniel Vogelbach’s option, no transactions have been made to this offense.

Most of the resources have gone to keeping the starting rotation a clear-cut strength while improving the biggest concern from a year ago, the bullpen.

While the relief pitching could still use another arm or two, the Mets would absolutely be wise to also get at least one more bat, preferably one with some power.

  • The Mets may be looking to make bullpen moves in free agency
  • Mets ‘skeptical’ that reunion with Michael Conforto is possible
  • Mets potentially looking to move starting pitcher after free agency spending spree

Report: Steve Cohen thinks the Mets need more offense:

Ken Rosenthal, Senior MLB Writer for The Athletic, shared the following buzz just last night.

“For all Cohen has invested, people familiar with his thinking indicated the owner still believes the Mets need more offense, prompting the team to explore not just the market for Correa (before he signed), but also for players such as J.D. Martinez and Michael Conforto.”

Music to all Mets fans’ ears.

There is no denying when reviewing this Mets roster, more talent needs to be added to the batting order. As stated above, specifically, a hitter with the power to provide the Mets with more home runs. And luckily, it does not seem like the spending will stop anytime soon.

Whether it be one of the players highlighted above by Rosenthal, Conforto, Martinez, Trey Mancini, Brandon Drury, or Adam Duvall, the Mets have a plethora of options available out there to give their lineup what it needs.

Should the Mets add one of these bats, it positions their offense much better for 2023. It is the lone aspect of the team to not be addressed with an outside, free agent yet. However, if Cohen is motivated, Billy Eppler will have another prime opportunity to add to this already strong free-agency class for the Mets.
