Pitcher Kodai Senga strained his right hamstring in the top of the sixth inning during the New York Mets’ 4-3 win over the Washington Nationals on Thursday afternoon. Senga was covering first base after CJ Abrams hit a ground ball to the right of Pete Alonso, and Alonso’s errant throw forced Senga to jump and extend his right leg to tag the base.
“He’s going to get an MRI tomorrow”, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters. “We’ll see the severity of it, but he’s going to be on the IL. We just have to wait and see what we’re dealing with.”

Mets Starter Kodai Senga Goes on Injured List with Hamstring Strain

After the injury, Alonso was visibly upset with himself on the field, and many of his teammates consoled him between innings. While in real time it may have seemed that Alonso’s throw caused the injury, Senga sent interpreter Hiro Fujiwara to tell Alonso that he felt discomfort in his hamstring on the step before he jumped to catch Pete’s throw.

“I feel awful…I tried to make the best throw I could, and it just sucks. I wish it wouldn’t have turned out like that,” Alonso told reporters.

Possible Reinforcements
Moving forward, if Senga’s hamstring strain is severe, the Mets have a number of options to fill his spot in the rotation. Paul Blackburn, who recently made his first start of 2025 against the Los Angeles Dodgers, could be an option, although the Mets had hoped to keep him in the bullpen for the time being.
Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas are also still on the mend, with Manaea striking out four in his second rehab start with the Brooklyn Cyclones on Tuesday. Frankie Montas is seemingly closer to a return, as he will make his fifth rehab start on Friday. However, Mendoza did say that the Mets could utilize the full 30-day rehab window with Montas.
