Mets ‘skeptical’ that reunion with Michael Conforto is possible

December 13, 2022 by Empire Sports Media

The New York Mets outfield could still use one more addition. Quite possibly, the even bigger need is one more power bat for this batting order.

In the outfield currently, the Mets have recently re-signed Brandon Nimmo, Starling Marte, and Mark Canha. One familiar name thrown around to add to that group this offseason has been Michael Conforto.

Conforto had a good seven-year run with the Mets from 2015-2021. The former Mets’ top prospect is also still very young at 29 years old.

Statistically speaking, Conforto batted .270 or better and hit 27 or more home runs in three seasons. In two of his years with the Mets, Conforto had 82 or more runs batted in.

Specifically, that power Conforto proved to give the Mets in the past is what they need direly at this point in the offseason.

Conforto was always known for his natural swing, and if he gets back to his usual self, could undeniably give this Mets lineup a boost it needs.

Not to mention, the Mets, as stated above, need a fourth outfielder. One who could ideally platoon with Canha and his right-handed bat, which Conforto, with his left-handed bat, would fit perfectly.

  • Mets potentially looking to move starting pitcher after free agency spending spree
  • The Mets have 2 final needs this off-season
  • Mets make huge splash adding Kodai Senga to pitching rotation

Mets “skeptical” of reunion with Michael Conforto:

Unfortunately, recent buzz from Mike Puma of The New York Post suggests the following on Conforto possibly returning to the Mets.

“There is skepticism within the organization that a Conforto-Mets reunion can materialize given the outfielder might want an escape from the narrative that he erred last offseason in rejecting the qualifying offer from the club.”

While this rumor is disappointing to hear, it does at least seem to indicate that the Mets are somewhat interested in Conforto. In the end, offering him a strong deal, the best one he gets is what it would ultimately take for the Mets to get it done.

With the free agent market moving, options to fill needs at positions of concern are becoming slimmer. Simply put, the Mets could use the power, position he plays, and the overall talent that Conforto has at this point in time. Signing Conforto would just add the icing on the cake at this point in the offseason for the Mets. Hopefully, the two can make something materialize imminently.
